Weber Custom Gallatin spruce/maple~I fist played a Gallatin in the States ten years ago and remember it still. This is an example of where every cent has gone into the sound. No bindings, no colour and satin varnish but it looks great. I've had this one upgraded to maple back and sides from the standard mahogany, with a solid hand carved spruce top, cast tailpiece and Brekke bridge its the least expensive US of A made F5 around. The basic spec of course does not affect the sound, this is a bluegrass cannon, bark and bite a plenty, volume to challenge those ba*j*s but with enough complexity to make a great all-rounder. The mahogany adds a depth to the sound that to my ear moves the sound towards an oval hole woodyness, but it retains the bark and chop of a an F5, lots of bright clear trebles and mids and plenty of woof from the low end, great for bluegrass and any other style. Bret, Bruce's genius man with the fishing got in touch wanting to try something new so I got together with him and Rick (Banuelos, Bruce's manager and all round luthier, ideas man and fountain of knowledge) and we came up with the Black Beauty. Its a Gallatin A with snakehead headstock, tortoise bound top and soundhole, quilted maple back and sides, Brekke bridge and high gloss finish. The custom vintage A has been modelled on the old teens Gibsons, it has been favourably compared to Nugget and Gilchrist. Some have asked how you can improve on an old Gibbo if that's the sound you are after, well of course you can't quite reproduce that hard to define oldness but what this amazing mandolin has is remarkable volume, that huge solid bass of the old teens As but without a hint of thuddyness and incredible balance, the mids are rich and complex, the trebles sweet and clear. Somehow it has all the qualities of the best Gibson As but with amazing definition and projection. Weber Yellowstone 'F' style bluegrass mandolin~Bluegrass heaven!!! Bruce's Yellowstone in spruce and beautiful flamed maple with tone bar bracing. Its got bark and chop, it’s a hoss, ban*os beware. Weber Fern~Bruce’s top of the range F5, beautiful fern headstock inlay, spectacular flamed maple back and sides, radiussed fretboard, tone bar braced. This is only the second fern we’ve had in, the last was four years ago but I remember it well. Those that read my ramblings regularly will be aware of my general preference for the oval hole sound, those that have spoken to me in the shop might have been told that two of my favourite ever mandolins were F5s, (contrary is my middle name) the last Fern was one of those. If my sound memory serves me this one is even more impressive. Really the best of both worlds, everything you want from a bluegrass hoss, incredible chop, fantastic projection and clear, precise trebles but it also has some of the sweetness and resonance of an oval hole. We all like different things, otherwise I would only have on mandolin in the shop in each price range but this Fern is one of my all time favourites. With rectangular hardshel case.~A superlative F5 in sound and looks from Bruce Weber. I described the Summit F200S as 'having it all' as a bluegrass mandolin so how do they compare? I'd say that if you were going for out and out b**j* killing and playing fast and hard most of the time the Summit has it, this Weber has more in the way of rich tone and sublety. Lovely dark bass and warm middles with clear trebles but still plenty of cut. Made from old stock Engleman Spruce top and select grade flamed maple back and sides, it is one of the most amazing looking and sounding mandolins I've ever seen or heard. Hand rubbed satin true spirit varnish with custom colouring by Brett Byers, "The Weber" script inlay in mother of pearl, unbelievably gorgeous Weber flower pot peghead inlay in gold and white mother of pearl sealed with tung oil and black/white bound f holes. This small batch has been lauded by people with many decades in the mandolin trade more than myself as the equal of any contemporary mandolin made by the so called big five (Gilchrist, Nugget, Monteleone, Dudenbostel and Heiden). Rick Banuelos at Weber says "everyone in the workshop is saying it is the best mandolin we have ever built." It resonates as you handle it without playing a note, always a good sign. It has immense power with a remarkable depth and complexity of tone, responding equally well to the gentlest touch or the heavy pick of the loudest player, it chops and barks like few others and sings sweetly when asked. It has that low end 'woof' that only the very best f hole mandolins achieve, playability and response are truly remarkable, its as loud as any mandolin I've ever heard but often this is at the expense of subtlety and richness of tone, this is one of those very rare mandolins that seems to have it all!
