Capek A4 Basic Mandola~My favourite mando plus three minus five. That's three inches longer fretboard (17") and a fifth down CGDA (I think that's an inverted fifth technically??). Its everything I've come to expect from a Capek, huge bass, incredible sustain and warmth. I am always amazed at how low and deep a good mandola sounds, there is someting special that can't be defined, sounds deeper than a guitar, great for singing with or adding a different palate to group sessions. Capek A4 Exclusive~I'm running out of superlatives to describe Capek mandolins, everyone has different opinions about tone but to me me the Capek tone is the best. Warm, sweet, strong bass with clear high trebles. Rosta is also the most consistent maker I've worked with, he gets it right every time. Not only great tone but fantastic mature spruce and beautifully flamed maple, pearl block fretboard inlay, flowerpot abalone hedtstock inlay and stunning wood marquetry purfling arround the sides and soundhole. Capek A4 basic octave mandolin - SOLD~Rosta is the man for getting great bass from a mandolin and that's what you want from an octave mandolin. I've been dreaming about a Capek mandola for many years now but have kept him pretty busy (working alone Rosta's output is small) with mandolin orders. We all carry in ideal sound in our minds of what our chosen instrument should sound like, rarely we find an instrument that matches that sound. This is the one for me with the mandola. It has that deep purr that makes a good mandola sound much lower than it is but the tone isn't just dark and mysterious, it has complexity and charachter too, mine is on order.~Sometomes dreams come true. Capek A4 exclusive 10 string mandolin/mandola - SOLD~Regular visitors to this site and readers of my wafflings will know of my love of the ten string mandolin/mandola (and other 10 sting mandolin family members) tuned CGDAE, bottom four mandola, top four mandolin. I have had others made with mandola scale length (Rigel, Moon, Old Wave) and reasoned that as Rosta Capek gets the most bass out of a mandolin he was the one to have a go at a mandolin scale length version, getting a strong C from a 14" scale would be a challenge only he could meet. The sound of the top four is as fantastic as my A4 basic. The mandola sound, in particular the C is amazing, maybe not quite as strong as a 16 or 17" dola but not far enough out to be worth comment, and it still has to play in. Capek F4 Professional~Rosta does it again! That beautiful dark woody sound that Rosta makes his own, he is the most consistent maker I know. Capek F5 Professional~I think that Rosta's professional model provides the best value finish/price combination, with triple bound top and back, bound fingerboard and headstock and flowerpot inlay. With aged spruce top and exquisitely flamed maple back and sides it has Rosta's classic sound, all the cut and bark expected of an F5 by the blugrassers but with a little more middle and that wonderful woody bass.~I think that Rosta's professional model provides the best value finish/price combination, with triple bound top and back, bound fingerboard and headstock and flowerpot inlay. Capek Old Era F4 oval hole - SOLD~Another classic from Rosta Capek. Top made form spruce over 30 years old, single piece flamed maple back and sides, pearl truss rod cover and double flowerpot headstock inlay. Classic looks and classic sound, a perusal of this site will tell of my preference for oval hole mandolins, this one has Rosta's consistent great tone, very deep, woody, warm bass, rich middles and clear high trebles. Capek F5 Sam~A classic bluegrass warhorse from my favourite mandolin maker, its got the chop and cut a plenty, clear high cutting trebles and great projection and tone. Ideal for b**j* assassination. When I was setting it up in our playing room I played a chop chord, someone who was playing a guitar at the other end of the shop looked round in surprise, he had heard it over his own playing 15 yards away!
Triple bound body, fretboard (radiussed) and headstock, beautiful flamed maple back and sides, all woods are at least 40 years old. Fantastic detailing, gorgeous abalone inlays, intricate marquetry alongside the triple binding and beautiful flamed maple one piece back. Sounds darn good too.. Its got volume to drown out most cannons, its a hoss and all the other standard cliches... The best F5s have a richness and depth of tone that gives them the best qualities of f and oval hole mandolins, clarity, cut and projection AND bass and resonance with sweet mids.
