Guitar Page Header~At The Acoustic Music Company we specialise in selling guitars from small workshops. We mostly deal directly with the Luthier who designs the instruments and in many cases has a hand in making them. These are companies who care as much about the instruments as you and I do. If you have an enquiry or special requirement we will talk to the creator of your instrument. These guitars are generally workshop rather than factory made.~~~115~445~~
New Display Item~Not only do you get a hand made instrument but also the creativity of the Luthier can be seen and heard in each one. Woods are hand selected rather than ordered on mass, bindings and rossetes are from natural materials, no plastic. Why buy a big name guitar from a factory when we can offer you one that is hand made and voiced by a master Luthier?

Atkin Guitars~British made steel string guitars from £1695.

Alister Atkin has been building up a great reputation for his very fine hand built guitars for quite a few years now. Based in Canterbury Alister's guitars are played by Eddie Reader, Nick Harper, Boo Hewerdene and Kate Walsh to name a few. Recently the OM and J-45 have had great reviews in the British guitar press and he has received two awards from Guitarist Magazine. We are very impressed with the build quality and tone, even more so with the great prices.~~~115~11751~~

Baranik Guitars~Sole luthier hand made guitars from £3795

I met Mike in LA in January 2003 in a room full of luthiers I had been dying to meet. Most of them were among the most well known contemporary American luthiers. I had never heard of Mike at the time. I played a lot of great guitars that day but kept coming back to the Baraniks.

I've had the privilege to meet some of the finest luthiers around since I started TAMCO and to play some of the finest guitars being made today but I haven't played many that have exited me as much as these acoustic and aesthetic works of art. Mike mixes the great traditions of guitar luthery with some ideas of his own, all bodies are asymmetrical for comfort but you wouldn't notice, bracing patterns are his own too. Mike says that he likes to make the guitars look as good as they sound, say no more!

All the Baraniks we’ve had have sold soon after arrival.

Due end 2008/early 2009.

Bourgeois~Hand made guitars from £1895

Dana Bourgeois is one of the world's leading authorities on guitar tonewoods and voicing, collaborating with the likes of Gibson, Martin and Eric Schoenberg on his way to producing these exceptionally fine instruments. Winner of the Acoustic Guitar Magazine player’s choice gold award .

Working from a small workshop with six experienced luthiers Dana builds some of the finest acoustic guitars around today. No production lines here, these are hand made instruments with Dana's input and finishing in each one, I can never reach him by 'phone because he's always in the (work)shop.

All woods are hand selected by Dana and tops tap tuned, watching these guys at work is a sight to behold. Hand made instruments from master craftsmen at the price of many a famous name factory made instrument, come and see (and hear) the difference. Players include Doc Watson, Bryan Sutton, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Earl and many more.

The acoustic Music Co is the only UK dealership for these amazing Guitars. We usually have ten or more Bourgeois in stock! They are our best selling guitar.

Charis~We are delighted to be the only European outlet for Charis guitars (pronounced Karis). Bill Wise only builds around thirty five of his fine guitars a year. He was named as one of the one hundred most important people at General Motors for his engineering and design skills. When he wanted a good guitar to replace his old campfire special he made one. The rest, as they say, is history. Within five years he had started a career as a full-time luthier. Bill put his design and engineering skills to good use developing his own variation of X bracing with finger and tone bar braces adjusted to get his desired tone. He uses a mortise and tennon neck joint with two stainless steel bolts. In the interests of perfecting his skills Bill keeps to just two body designs, the Small Jumbo with a fifteen and a quarter inch lower bout and the Grand Concert at fourteen and seven eighths inches. Featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine in July 2007 Bill is renowned not only for the tone of Charis guitars but also the immaculate finishing, an engineer's eye for detail is apparent in every aspect of these amazing guitars.~~~115~12988~~

Eastman Guitars~Hand made guitars from £995

We had been selling Eastman mandolins for a few years before the guitars arrived. Ttheir Jazz guitars surpass even their excellent value mandolins in terms of bang for buck. Fantastic build, finish and tone. We had stopped stocking jazz guitars until these came along because it cost too much to hold stock of guitars that sold for two to three times the price of the Eastmans but rarely sold anyways. These guitars are of the same quality and sound as the £2k -£3k jazzers we used to stock. All solid woods, all with custom fibreglass case.

After my visit to the Beijing factory I am even more impressed, tops and backs are hand carved, not even roughed out by machine.~~~115~10421~~

Rob Ehlers started making guitars in Santa Monica in 1968. Moving to Portland, Oregon in 1971 Rob has gained a reputation and following for his outstanding detailing and use of old woods. He developed his celebrated model 15, with a 15 1/2" lower bout in the nineteen seventies when all around were making dreadnoughts, OOs and OOOs. The 15 is now a superlative fingerstylists guitar.. he turns out a spectacular dreadnought too... Don Gallagher~Hand made guitars from £1400

Don Gallagher and his family have been making Guitars in Wartrace Tennessee since 1965! He says, "Our guitar making is not just a business; it is a way of life." Don's claim to fame (I can vouch for the fact that Don isn't the kind of man who craves fame) is making guitars for Doc Watson. Two Doc Watson models are in the range. Every Gallagher made has been logged and when known, changes in ownership recorded.

These are completely hand made guitars in the American tradition - all built with the highest quality solid tonewoods - from the heart of country country (if you see what I mean). They are of the very highest aesthetic and acoustic quality at very reasonable prices. The Acoustic Music Company is delighted to be Don's only UK dealership. .

James Goodall~Hand made guitars from £1800

James Goodall makes his spectacular guitars in Hawaii. In his youth he counted Kim and Larry Breedlove, Geoff Stelling and Greg Deering among his friends, they all went in different directions to make excellent musical instruments. In 1972 James made his first guitar and has not looked back since. With only ten people working in the workshop he has a hand in the making of every instrument. He says "I want every Guitar to come out as if I had made it myself. I want it to be perfect."

Of course Hawaii is the only place that Koa grows so he has access to small quantities of AAA and AAAA woods. You can choose which grade of woods are used and be sure that James' unrivalled attention to detail will lead to a masterpiece both cosmetically and in tone. All woods weather they are Koa, Maple, Rosewood, Walnut or top woods are hand selected by James. All bindings are natural materials. Great attention is given to voicing each individual instrument. James doesn't believe that scalloped bracing is the way to go, instead he uses a light bridge and graduates the top, and this results in clarity of tone throughout the tonal range that has to be heard to be believed. These are some of finest guitars available today.

Lance has a long waiting list, counting Tommy Emmanuel, Alex de Grassi and Doug Smith among his customers, eighteen months after our meeting the first one has arrived, it was well worth the wait.~~~115~6941~~

Petros Guitars~You will only find Bruce Petros' guitars in a select few US dealers, the kind that open by appointment only. Bruce has been making guitars since 1972, he works with his son Mat in their Worksop in Kaukauna Wisconsin making about thirty five guitars a year. These are some of the finest acoustic steel string guitars available today. All tops are graduated and pre-stressed into a thirty inch radius, this gives incredible balance and stability. Necks are made with end to end flip matched pieces and dovetailed. Saddles a titled backwards slightly so that the break angle is split and all the pressure goes down through the saddle. Only sustainable woods are used, Sitka spruce is reclaimed from bridge trusses and Alaskan fish traps, Walnut comes from a State Park ten miles form Bruce's workshop. We are expecting two guitars early in 2009; FS (Fingerstyle) in Redwood and Curly Claro Walnut and an Applecreek Grand Concert in Sitka and Rosewood.~~~115~13059~~

Stanford Guitars~The history of Stanford Custom Guitars goes back to 1990, when the Czech master luthier Frantisek Furch and the German guitarist and designer Toni Goetz met for the first time, one year after the breakdown of the former socialist wall. Both being passionate musicians, they shared the vision of creating great guitars that meet the highest standards. The ‘Old World’ has always been famous for its great instruments makers. Bohemian (Bohemia is the Western area of the Czech Republic) luthiers have written history including well known names such as John Dopyera, founder of DOBRO guitars. Frantisek says "When we started designing our flat tops, and arch tops, our approach was to connect old values and traditions of craftsmanship with modern technologies in the best way possible.’

Martin Simpson says “We do indeed live in the Golden Age of guitar making- and it’s not just the super expensive instruments which tell us that. Stanford make a range of guitars which would suit all levels from earnest beginner to pro-player. The workmanship and attention to detail is excellent on all these instrument. I wish I’d had one 40 years ago- I’d be a better player now.”~~~115~5924~~

David Weber~Hand made sole luthier guitars from £1500

I first came across David's guitars in several of the US of A's more exclusive guitar outlets. The tone of a rosewood OM I played in Mando Bros has stuck with me ever since. David uses the dreaded CNC to do all the boring and tedious parts that gain nothing from being done by hand. This allows him and his assistant to do the important bits by hand, selecting the finest woods, graduating tops and tap tuning to adjust bracing individually for each guitar, necks are all hand fitted. Using the machinery to do the tedious work allows him to build these very fine guitars at unbelievable prices. (The struggling Canadian Dollar also helps with this, David is in Vancouver). All come with hard cases.

K. Yairi Guitars~Established in 1935, K. Yairi guitars have been made under the watchful eye of the son of the founder Kazuo Yairi for over 40 years. Around 30 people hand-make these amazing instruments in Kani, in the mountains of Honshu, Japan. The woods are hand-selected and air, not kiln, dried for 5-10 years, logs are cut in the on-site sawmill, all guitars have hand fitted dovetailed neck joints. Kazuo has a plaque in his workshop which reads: "There is no other way of surviving except through high quality".

The 73 year old master luthier took over the family business from his father in 1965 and has earned a reputation for making beautiful hand crafted acoustic guitars appreciated by world renowned artists such as: Paul McCartney, Ritchie Blackmore, Bob Weir & Jerry Garcia, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Carlos Santana, U2, Monte Montgomery & Ani Difranco. Yairi guitars are entirely handmade by skilled craftsman. Cases are not included, at these prices for a hand made guitar that's hardly surprising.~~~115~10155~~
