Mandolin Page Header~I'm not a gambling man but I took one here. One evening while surfing the web I chanced across the Flinthills Mandolins website, I was so taken with the quality of Mark Franzke's work we exchanged a few emails and had a phone conversation or two. I then took the plunge and ordered two mandolins. I had never heard his name before but figured that someone able to work to such high aesthetic standards might know a thing or two about tone. The gamble paid off, I think Flinthills is the best kept secret in the mandolin world today.. not for long... Mark works alone in his workshop in the flint hills of Kansas making these immaculate mandolins, get one before the prices go up.~~~11445~11447~~

Flinthills A5 special~Beautiful rich chestnut brown A5, quilted maple back with rosewood body bindings, Allen solid/cast tailpiece, Grover tuners, bone nut, Steve Smith (Cumberland Acoustics) solid ebony bridge, ebony fretboard and TKL case. Flinthills A4 special - SOLD~Pumpkin topped A4 with beautifully flamed maple back and sides in a rich darkish chestnut. Mother of Pearl fleur-de-lis headstock inlay and logo, bound soundhole with B/W/B/W/B wide rosette, solid-cast Allen tailpiece, ebony fretboard and bridge, rosewood/white stripe top and back bindings, triple side-bound headstock with nickel fittings. This beautiful A4 has a very rich and complex sound. The bases are not quite as strong as my Flinthills A4 but I've been playing it a good while now so I expect that will come, it sounds like mine did when it was new, the mids are full and vibrant and the trebles sweet and clear. Flinthills A5 - SOLD~Stunningly beautiful A5 from Mark. Solid spruce top, gorgeous flamed maple back and sides, triple bound top, back and headstock, double bound ebony fingerboard, mother of pearl inlays, bone nut and tone bar bracing. Occasionally I come across and f hole mandolin that has all the characteristics you want from an f hole instrument - bark, chop, clear trebles and great projection - but with some of the bass and resonance of an oval hole (tho' not usually at this price). This is such a mandolin, very powerful and versatile, great for bluegrass or any other style. With hardshel case.~Stunningly beautiful A5 from Mark. Flinthills A4 - SOLD~Another aesthetic masterpiece from Mark. Spruce top, tight tiger-stripe flamed maple back and sides, mother of pearl headstock inlays (with a very tasty take on the fleur-de-lis), rope sound hole binding, triple bound front, back and headstock, double bound ebony fretboard, bone nut and hand made compensated ebony bridge. It is styled along the lines of teens Gibson As, with the fingerboard flush to the top and 10 frets to the heel join. Regular visitors here or those that know me will know how much I like strong bass in a mando, I have played this beauty against all my faves and it comes out tops!! I have never heard stronger bass in a new mandolin but it doesn't become thuddy, like some old Gibbos, it is sweet and warm. The mids are rich and resonant, the high notes have a bell like quality, clear but ringing out. With hardshel case.~Another aesthetic masterpiece from mark. That's a lot of upmarket features on a stunning mandolin. The sound is amazing, if I hadn't become so attached to my Flinthills I might be swapping. Flinthills F5 special~Our first F5 from Mark and it’s a beauty. Gorgeous Autumn brown gloss sunburst, single bound top and back, solid cast Allen tailpiece, tight tiger striped flamed maple back and sides and mother of pearl logo and headstok inlay. Its loud with powerfull mids giving a great 'woof' of air from a chop chord, solid and woody bases and clear, well defined sharp trebles. Great for bluegrass, as mentioned, but it also has a richness in tone to make it a very versatile mandolin. With TKL case.~Our first F5 from Mark and it’s a beauty.
