Mandolin News - What’s New(s)? 2/02/08

Mandolin News.
There’s another Flinthills here and another on the way. I’m still playing mine after about nine months now. So that tells what I think of them, with the choice that I have and new stuff coming every week I rarely keep a mandolin that long. Two A models, oval and f hole are due from Audey Ratliff very soon, I’m looking forward to that.

Lots of used goodies in. Two ‘dolas, both of which I wanted to keep (oh the temptations…), a Capek A4 basic at £300 less than new price and barely used (if the £/euro exchange rate stays the way it is new stock will be going up more than previously reported), we don’t get a lot of used Capeks so don’t hesitate if your tempted. There’s a very nice folkster from local luthier Richard Osborne and an Ozark for those on a limited budget in need of a mando with a strap hanger.

Ozark 2255 Vintage Mandolin £295
Osborne folk mandolin Vintage Mandolin £495
Davidson Mandola Vintage Mandolin £995
Capek A4 Basic Vintage Mandolin £1095
Rigel Q200 mandola Vintage Mandolin £2195
Flinthills A4 artist Mandolin £1450

Guitar News.
A busy month for guitars. With the arrival of a Torridge in mahogany and a Clyst in rosewood we now have twelve different Brook guitars in! Its taken a few years to build up this level of stock, we never seemed to have the model in the wood customers wanted, hopefully that won’t be a problem now.

Two more flatpicking monsters from Don Gallagher in the Tennessee hills have arrived. Made famous by Doc Watson the Gallagher family has been hand making guitars in Tennessee for over four decades. Right in the heart of Country country they know how to get it right.

We’ve got two more from Alister Atkin, a dread and a slope shouldered dreadnought. Alister is one of the few UK luthiers that can make an American style guitar as good they do it themselves, bags of tone and volume and great build quality.

After dithering for a while we have finally decided to try out the Stanford range, made by Frantisek Furch. We are regretting having waited so long. I don’t know of any better guitars at the price and know of many more expensive instruments not this good.

We’ve had three Huss and Dalton guitars in for a while now so have decided to sell them as demonstrator models, all £500 or more off new price… grab one while you can. Four used guitars in since the last update, including our second Olson! Where else in the UK can you try two Olsons? Also an as new Gypsy Jazzer from the sadly deceased David Hodson (David very kindly phoned my with advice when I opened TAMCO) a Tacoma dreadnought and a Taylor Big Baby.
