Sole luthier mandolins from £3500
Wyatt established Wilkie Stringed Instruments in 2009, ending his most recent engagement as the master craftsman for Benedetto Guitars, long considered the “last word” in archtop jazz guitars. Now living with his wife and two children in Comox, British Columbia, he is glad to build his own designs of mandolins and guitars that match the quality of the masters that have inspired him through his career. Instrument design is one of Wilkie’s strengths.
The son of a professional mandolinist, Wyatt Wilkie started his musical career as a performer, influenced by the musicians in his father’s circle, including Jethro Burns and Tiny Moore. After living in Indonesia for a while Wyatt started to get his feet back on the ground working as a grave digger in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was there that he built his first mandolin. That experience was enough for Wyatt to decide to build mandolins full-time. Soon after, he and his wife left Albuquerque for a seaside town in Wales, where he established Wilkie Mandolins and for five-years he crafted instruments from a rented workshop in an 18th century church, selling to collectors as far afield as London, Helsinki, and Tokyo.
Returning to North America, Wyatt moved Wilkie Mandolins to a new shop in Crescent City, Northern California. It was there that he followed up on an ad placed by Robert Benedetto, seeking a master apprentice. Wyatt flew to Savannah, Georgia, for an interview and was hired that day. To Wyatt, it was almost as if Stradivari himself had offered to reveal his secrets of tap tuning, fit and finish.
