Rigel
Hand made mandolins from £2000 Pete Langdell (see picture) has reinvented the wheel, or the mandolin to be more precise! There was a lot of resistance to his ideas at first but these mandolins speak for themselves, enough to impress the likes of Chris Thile and Radim Zenkle. So what’s so different? Apart from the innovative body shape designs, the sides are not a strip of wood bent round but carved from a solid block. This means that the back and neck can be attached and the top clamped in place then the instrument strung up and played. The top can be removed as many times as desired to be voiced to the required sound. And believe me Peter can carve the top and braces to recreate an amazing range of sounds. Since 2007 Pete has worked alone making limited numbers of Rigel mandolins. |

Rigel CT-110 with pickup USED
SoldI haven't had a CT-110 in for a few years now. Of all the thousands of mandolins I have handled since I started TAMCO back in 2001 the CT-110 is one of my all time favourites.
Pete Langdell took on the sceptics and proved beyond doubt that you can take a new approach and make a world class mandolin. Peter's revolution wasn't the overall look but that the rims are carved from a sold block.
This is a very fine example of the CT-110 in almost as new condition with the original tweed rectangular case. It has the classic sound a plenty with rich and warm tones and that special and unique Rigel magic... and a built in pickup.

Rigel I-110 USED SOLD
SoldWas £3250. Dusty Corner price £2495.
I can still remember when I first saw a photo of Pete's I-110. I thought it was darn ugly. By the end of the day I had gone back to the photos many times and completely changed my mind. When I got the opportunity to buy it I snapped it up but unfortunately it's the victim of my latest thinning of the herd.. just too many at home..
Believed to be one of only three made with this headstock design... I know I am going to regret this....

Rigel CT110 f hole - USED SOLD
SoldA contemporary classic, in great shape with original case and non original bridge pickup. Even in the days when I only had ears for oval sound hole mandolins I loved the sound of the CT110 f hole. It's loud and chops beautifully but has a richness in the mid range that is typical of the CT110, yummy.

Rigel A Plus Deluxe Cream Used SOLD
SoldThis is a fine example of the A+ deluxe in great condition in a beautiful cream finish.
It has the typical Rigel tone which I always think of as deep and resonant, clear and precise with good volume and projection but with great subtlety.
-
Rigel A Plus Deluxe Blue USED SOLD
Sold
Pete Langdell is now back at work at Rigel but working alone. Mandolins from the time when there was a small team don't come up used very often (perhaps because I've got so many at home). This is a fine example of the A+ deluxe in great condition and a gorgeous blue finish with custom headstock inlay and original tweed oblong case and pickup.
It has the typical Rigel tone which I always think of as deep and resonant, clear and precise with good volume and projection but with great subtlety.

Rigel Custom Comet SOLD
SoldWith an Adirondack spruce top and Pete's great pickup this custom comet sounds great, acoustic and plugged in. It has Rigel's legendary playability and a rectangular tweed hardshell case. It looks ... fill in the space... I know I am going to get lots of grief about this from the purists but the purest of purists (glad I'm writing not saying this) don't like Rigels anyways.
It all started with an idea to post on various mandolin websites the opportunity for folk to design their own Rigel. The response was not what I and Pete and Peter had hoped for so I was left with the design job to do myself. Being a literal and unimaginative kind of person the obvious design for Rigel's new Comet model was to make the tail one end of a comet's tail and angle the soundhole for the comet. The guys at Rigel contributed the hot rod car flame and the black top with distant star sparkle and midnight blue back and sides and here we are. I think it's wonderful, if you agree please let me know, if you hate it, please tell somebody else.

Rigel Q95 Espresso con Pana cream top with Petite Bouche Used SOLD
SoldThe Rigel Q95 is also known as the Gypsy Q. It was designed by Ted Eschliman of JazzMando.com. They were voiced by Pete to have the sweet sound of vintage oval-hole mandolins. This is the "Espresso con Pana," cream top with ‘Petite Bouche’ sound hole. It is a wrench to let it go from my collection but sometimes needs must. It is carved from select, highly-figured Vermont rock maple and Adirondack spruce with a maple neck with graphite reinforced truss rod, radiused ebony fingerboard, gold Grover tuners and Rigel tailpiece, abalone diamond-pattern inlays’ internal piezo pickup and hardshell case.

Rigel Q200 mandola Used SOLD
SoldI had my eyes on one of these when Ted Eschliman of Jazz Mando first worked with Pete langdell on it, I couldn't afford it at the time but it eventually found its way here. It has an amazing brassy kind of tone, the deep growl of a dola but with amazing focus, no stray tones whizzing about. If you are thinking of coming to see it let me know because it's in no man's land at the moment, or to be less obtuse, on my wall (when I'm not playing it) at home, therefore at any moment it might get marked sold...

Rigel CT 110 Blue SOLD
SoldOne of my favourite Rigels ever is back (probably briefly). This beauty used to be Ted Eschliman's, from jazzmando. It is in excellent condition and has the classic CT-110 sound, there is an amazing depth and richness to the tone, complex but well defined... its very hard to describe the tone of such a fantastic mandolin. Sounds great plugged in too.
Its one of a kind and comes with the original Rigel tweed rectangular vase.

Rigel R-100 USED
SoldPete Langdell took on the sceptics and proved beyond doubt that you can take a new approach and make a world class mandolin. Peter's revolution wasn't the overall look but that the rims are carved from a sold block.
This R100 is in great shape and has the classic Rigel sound, rich, full and loverly and comes with the rectangular tweed case (pickup not working)..
Consignment sale.

Rigel CT110 Black Warrior - used - SOLD
SoldThe Black Warrior is back! Having had a happy home with a Rigel fan for a while he traded it in for a Rigel mandola. In great condition, it has the signature CT110 sound, rich and complex with much more going on and much more subtlety than a typical F5. With original case.
-
Rigel CT110 Oval Hole USED SOLD
SoldI remember this one, it's great to have it back. There are not too many oval hole CT-110's around. This beauty is in excellent condition with original case. It sounds as good as my oval hole Rigel Jethro, all the depth, bass, richness and sustain typical of an oval hole mandolin but with great definition and separation with clarity and projection... grab it before I add it to my Rigel collection.
-
Rigel A plus deluxe - SOLD
SoldPete Langdell is now back at work at Rigel but working alone. Mandolins from the time when there was a small team don't come up used very often (perhaps because I've got so many at home). Rigel R200 Mandola SOLD
SoldI am a great lover of the mandola and this is one of the best I’ve played. With a radiussed fingerboard and a 32 mm nut width it is a dream to play, combining good volume with that deep and mellow growl and purr of a great mandola. With hard case.
-
Rigel G5 - SOLD
Sold
There were only 17 of these incredible and unique mandolins made before Rigel's star tragically waned (Pete Langdell is now up and running again). This was Pete's take on the classic F5 with a fantastic sweet tone.
-
Rigel Jethro - USED - SOLD
SoldI played one of the first Rigel Jethros in a tasty blue in LA in early 2004. The sound has haunted me ever since. It was Rigel's first model with binding but still made with solid carved rims. With its asymmetrical two point body in gorgeous dark cherry sunburst, block MoP fretboard inlays, gold fittings and a beautifully flamed maple back its stunning to look at.
It sounds incredible, if you thrash it with some chords the sound comes in big fat chunks, lots of volume and rich, warm, dark and deep resonant bass tones. The mids are warm and complex, the trebles sweet and clear with great projection. With a lighter touch it responds like only a Rigel does, great balance and projection from the open G to the high D at the 22nd fret.
Reluctantly I have decided to let this beauty go from my personal collection. It may be the only oval hole Jethro made.

Rigel CT 110 Blue - Used - SOLD
SoldThis beauty used to be Ted Eschliman's, from jazzmando. Since Rigel's demise I managed to pries it away from him as he wanted to move onto new projects. Unfortunately I sold it, when it comes back my way I'm keeping it. My normal photo set-up I had at the time I had this one didn't work for this loverly blue so apologies if these shots look a bit strange.
