Capek Hand made bluegrass mandolins from £1300

Rosta Capek (pronounced Roshka Chapek) trained as a violin maker in the 1980's but soon moved to mandolins. Since then his reputation has grown and grown. He has many well known players on board including Ricky Skaggs (see pictures below), Andy Statman, David Grissman, Radim Zenkl and Peter Rowan. You won't find anyone more dedicated to their art than Rosta, works of art and acoustic excellence are his life. He is one of the nicest mandolins makers you could ever meet, making the finest mandolins around.

As Rosta works alone, his mandolins are in short supply, we have now built up stock by ordering well in advance.

    Rosta is the man for getting great bass from a mandolin and that's what you want from an octave mandolin. This beauty in spruce and flamed maple with a twenty two and three quarters inch scale length has a very strong but controlled bass with fantastic warm and vibrant mids and clear ringing trebles.     My favorite mando plus three minus five. That's three inches longer fretboard (17") and a fifth down CGDA (I think that's an inverted fifth technically??). It's everything I've come to expect from a Capek, huge bass, incredible sustain and warmth. I am always amazed at how low and deep a good mandola sounds, there is something special that can't be defined, sounds deeper than a guitar, great for singing with or adding a different palate to group sessions.     I think that Rosta's professional model provides the best value finish/price combination, with triple bound top and back, bound fingerboard and headstock and flowerpot inlay. With aged spruce top and exquisitely flamed maple back and sides it has Rosta's classic sound, all the cut and bark expected of an F5 by the bluegrassers but with a little more middle and that wonderful woody bass.

    A fantastic F5 completely hand made by one of the nicest guys on this planet. Spruce top and European curly maple back and sides. American curly maple can look pretty stunning but the European is somehow more three dimensional, it looks like waves of sand under glass, wow. And the sound...hard to describe... its almost alive, come and play it.

    Another work of art and acoustic excellence from Rosta. Fantastic detailing, gorgeous abalone inlays, intricate marquetry alongside the triple binding and beautiful flamed maple one piece back. Sounds darn good too.. Its got volume to drown out most cannons, its a hoss and all the other standard clichés... The best F5's have a richness and depth of tone that gives them the best qualities of F and oval hole mandolins, clarity, cut and projection AND bass and resonance with sweet mids. With hardshell case.

    I have reduced this mandolin by £245 due to some untidy finishing by the scroll and neck join.
