Brentrup Sole luthier bluegrass mandolins from £5000 I had heard such great things about Hans Brentrup's mandolins that I got impatient waiting for one to come my way and ordered one. Hans has a reputation as one of the top solo builders today. He builds mostly in the traditional style with impeccable finishing and attention to detail but he is not afraid of innovation with such models as the Stealth. Whilst discussing my order Hans agreed to supply three mandolins to TAMCO! |

Brentrup Eclipse - USED SOLD
SoldHans is the master of old and new. My M21v is the ultimate in traditional design and old fashioned tastefulness. The recently sold Stealth and this Eclipse demonstrate his mastery of pushing the boundaries of design, some will love it some won't. Regular visitors to this site will know of my love of different designs so that puts me firmly in the former camp. The sound is Brentrup plus. I've had the privilege of playing some very fine mandolins over the last few years but few match a Brentrup. It has incredible power with a richness and depth of tone that is amazing. From the most delicate touch to the hardest chop it responds willingly, a truly amazing mandolin.

Brentrup Eclipse V8 Not for Sale
SoldHan's latest version of the Eclipse. He won't be making many more mandolins due to injury and semi-retirement. I am delighted to give this beauty pride of place in my own collection.

Brentrup Stealth V8 USED SOLD
SoldI sold Hans' V3 Stealth quite a few years back and still remember it as one of my favorite mandolins ever. This V8 is equally memorable. Its such a shame Hans stopped making mandolins, a great loss to the mandolin community.
Made in Italian spruce and sugar maple with a Jacob Hammerl spirit over oil violin varnish finish, dated Jan 2009.
It has Han's signature sound, full and rich with plenty of pop. With yellow Eastman shaped fiberglass case. I've still got my V6 Eclipse and its one of my keepers.

Brentrup M21V USED SOLD
SoldThis is one of the sweetest, richest most complex mandolins I've ever heard. It looks incredible too with immaculate workmanship and the most beautiful quilted maple back and sides.
Unfortunately due to ill health Hans has had to announce his retirement. If he hadn't agreed to finish the Eclipse V6 I have on order I wouldn't be selling this amazing mandolin.

Brentrup A1 oval hole Adirondack/Red spruce/red maple - SOLD
SoldThis oval hole A model from Hans has the same beautiful and elegant finishing as the A5 with the addition of a tortoise/white/tortoise soundhole binding. This is what a great oval hole mandolin should sound like (to me, you might disagree). Not many of the top makers make A4s so its great to have one from Hans. Others I have played have had very powerful bass and loud ringing trebles, as you would expect. Hans' oval (also as you might expect) is a more subtle affair. The basses are strong but warm and melodic, the mids are rich and complex, the trebles are sweet and clear. This would also be a great all-rounder but missing off bluegrass at one end of the spectrum and adding classical at the other end.

Brentrup F5 Poor Man's Loar
£5,295.00In stockThis beauty is in red spruce (Adirondack) and sugar maple with flowerpot abalone headstock inlay, tortoise pickguard, James tailpiece and a scalloped fingerboard extension. Hans achieves a balance of power, sweetness and cut that few others can emulate. This amazing mandolin responds to whatever you want it to do. It will cut through with the best of them with incredibly punchy chop chords. It has depth and complexity with clarity and sweetness, characteristics that from a lesser luthier are an either/or choice. It is one of the most versatile mandolins I have played.

Brentrup Stealth V3 deluxe - SOLD
SoldI am going to take some persuading to part with this one, its the ugliest, worst sounding mandolin I've ever heard

Brentrup A5 Adirondack/Red spruce/sugar maple USED SOLD
SoldOriginally sold by me and showing some of Hans' typical crazed varnish (maybe the thin varnish is why they sound so good?) this A5 is a snip and is in great condition. Hans stopped making mandolins a few years ago due to a shoulder injury so grab it while you can!
Mandolins don't come much classier than this. All Hans' mandolins have immaculate and very stylish finishing. The std models have tortoise bindings on a dark sunburst, nothing flash here just simple beautiful lines complimented with a James tailpiece and a sculpted rosewood pickguard. Hans chose sugar maple to compliment the red spruce/Adirondack top to achieve an incredible balance between cut and pop and depth and resonance of tone. The chop is forceful and powerful while retaining a richness and musicality of tone that only the best mandolin luthiers can achieve. Many f hole mandolins cut through by being harsh, not the case with a Brentrup. Basses are strong, the mid range is rich and complex and the trebles are clear and bright, this is a fantastically versatile mandolin by one of today's great mandolin builders.. buy it before I add it to my collection.
