Circa Acoustic Guitars

Circa Guitars is John Slobod. I met him in 2011 and was very impressed by his guitars, immaculate workmanship, detailing and tone to die for! He learned the trade with such legendary luthiers as David Freeman, Dana Bourgeois and Julius Borges, starting his own workshop in Maine in 2001.

John is a master at getting that pre-war Martin sound and is a great fan of red/Adirondack spruce.“I’m a red-spruce fanatic. You can get it to sound as delicate as you want or as powerful as you want." Adding that other important factors are “the quality of the topwood, the thickness of the finish, and hide glue. Some people say the glue doesn’t make a difference, but I can hear it. The back’s thickness, the way it bounces when you tap it, is another really big factor, especially on small guitars. A loose back really helps the bass response.”

I am beginning to think that 12 frets to the body and a cutaway is in ideal combination, you get the sweetness of the more centred bridge and access all the way to the top fret. And if anyone knows how to do it its John Slobod (John is Circa Guitars).

This is a truly special guitar and shows what plain 'ol rosewood is capable of. With some very fine red spruce (Adirondack) on the top this guitar has the vintage tone John is famous for in bucket loads. Its deep and dark and powerful but also sweet and warm with a wonderful clarity and focus coming from the Adirondack, more headroom than you could ever wish for. It will respond willingly to a heavy pick or the lightest fingernail or fingertip. Magic.
