Paul Woolson

When looking back at my visit to the Healdsburg guitar festival a few of the hundreds of amazing guitars stand out in my mind. Paul’s double top JP is one of those. For looks and sound it really stood out from the crowd, so much so that I ordered one to the same spec. Paul wanted to know what particular requirements I had but there was nothing to do to improve on that incredible guitar.

There has been a lot of talk about double-top guitars over the last few years. Paul is acknowledged by many as the leader in the field.

Paul says:

The term “double top” had been thrown around for a few years now. In its current form, it’s relatively new technology. However, classical builders have been used the original form of the double top for decades. The concept of a double-topped guitar is pretty simple: Sandwich a thin layer of aerospace honeycomb material between two very thin tops (or skins as we call them in our shop). This is done in a vacuum process, which creates a very stiff and stable soundboard. The main advantage to this structure is that the top can be built very lightly braced and still remain structurally sound. A lighter top allows more energy from the strings to turn into sound. The final result, in its very simplistic form, is a more responsive guitar. In the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced builder, that volume is carried throughout all of the strings, giving the guitar a rich, responsive and even tone.

Paul works alone so that he can personally attend to every detail of his guitars. he fanatical about quality and ensures that every instrument is up to his exacting standards. In his workshop there is only one guitar on the bench, he works on one guitar at a time from start to finish.
