Joel Stehr Guitars

Joel Stehr is an rapidly rising star in the world of North American luthiery. I met him in California in 2011 and was very impressed with his enthusiasm and skill, and his guitars. He is mostly self-taught with some valuable input from others, emphasising creativity, design and craftsmanship.

He says "Making a guitar requires technical expertise and intuition; it is never merely a mathematical or scientific process. I build what feels right to me, allowing my senses and instincts to guide me to a finished instrument." There you have it. Training alone won't get you there, neither will intuition without some technical knowledge.

Before this arrived I was beginning to wonder why I had ordered another Oregon Myrtle guitar from Joel (I think this is the fifth), now I know! It looks great and sounds amazing.

It has wonderful clarity and projection with great balance. All notes are crystal clear with outstanding definition and equal volume across the range. The bass notes are deep and lush with full and complex mids and rich trebles. It responds beautifully to a light touch or a more enthusiastic approach. A great all round guitar for all styles.

My second from Joel and just as stunning as the first. I am well and truly gobsmacked. With a 14 3/4" lower bout its bigger than many an OO but still noticeably smaller than an OM and very comfortable to play.

Joel said myrtle was becoming one of his favourite back and sides woods and now I know why. If you can take your eyes of it to play it it has an incredibly rich and complex tone with fantastic volume, clarity and projection. The bass is that of a small jumbo with great resonance and well defined depth, the mids and trebles are wonderfully warm and clear, a stunning guitar.

All my previous guitars from Joel have sold within days of arriving and I expect this beauty will too. It has incredible warmth and intimacy with great volume and projection. The lower bout is only a 1/4" smaller than an OM but it has the fullness of a much bigger guitar and wonderful playability. If I was keeping a collection at home these days this one would be among them.
