McElroy Guitars Sole luthier guitars from £3700 Brent McElroy grew up an a family or musicians and woodworkers, with over thirty years of woodworking experience he started making guitars in 1995. Whilst self taught he has discussed his craft with and been influenced many of the long established great luthiers of the modern age of guitar making. He’s a man after my own heart, he says “A guitar that looks beautiful but is challenging to play, just doesn’t feel good in your hands, is not the answer. A guitar that sounds great, but lacks in aesthetics is not the answer. A guitar that sounds great but doesn’t hold up over time is not the answer. I seek balance between tone, strength, playability and beauty. This is my approach to guitar building.” Brent acknowledges the approaches of the scientific camp and the intuitive approach to guitar building and says both can produce great results. I have had many conversations with mandolin luthiers on this topic, some working with the most detailed measurements of past great instruments, others experimenting and putting in large doses their own intuition. I agree with Brent, whatever works for the individual. The question of what makes a great luthier can never be answered, some strive for many years and never pass mediocrity, others produce great instruments from the start. Brent’s approach is a mixture of scientific (he has worked as a structural engineer) and ‘native’. He uses Cumpiano’s bracing theory (I’m getting out of my depth here..), using a slightly arched top and tuning the braces on each guitar to achieve the best strength/tone balance. Brent’s ideal tone is ‘rich and balanced, with strong bass response, fat trebles and a good mid-range to fill out the overall sound.’ |
