Howard Klepper Guitars

I had been an admirer of Howard's work for many years when I met him at Bruce Sexauer's workshop. The rightly famous Dovetail Madness guitars are unique and wonderful, I was soon to find out that, to coin one of my favourite clichés his work sounds as good as it looks. I just had to have a Dovetail madness here at TAMCO. After long discussions with Howard we decided to go for slightly less contrast than previous DMs. So this one will be in 'special' highly flamed Cocobolo and African Blackwood with a European Spruce and Western Red Cedar top. Its due around November.. watch this space..

Howard says;

"I began repairing and customizing guitars in 1968. I built my first acoustic guitar in 1977. While I mainly build steel-string flattop guitars, I also make archtops, classicals, and solid-body electrics. Every guitar I build is a one-of-a-kind, custom instrument. I have no standard model names or numbers. I work slowly; my output is about 12 guitars each year. I build as much as possible from raw materials, including making parts that many builders buy ready-made, such as liner blocks, fretboards, bridges, and purflings. I design and make my own marquetry purflings (the well-known “herringbone” is one example of marquetry).

Working on one guitar at a time allows me always to be attentive to an instrument’s unique qualities. It also lets me to keep feeling that my work is fun. While some have called my guitars works of art that should be displayed in museums, that does not capture their essence. They are always at the same time tools built to make music; tone, playability, and structural integrity are the foremost considerations, and set the parameters within which I design."
