Tom Doerr Guitars

After being inspired by the playing of Phil Keaggy Tom ordered a couple of guitars from Bill Wise (Charis guitars, see the Charis page on this website) in the late 1990s and built his first guitar in 2001, by 2004 he was a full time luthier. Tom cites Jeff Traugott and Michi Matsuda (see Matsuda guitars on this website) as influences, he also studied with the one and only Ervin Somogy (also on this site). I have been following his work for a few years now and am delighted to have him on board.

Tom says: My approach to guitars is simple: make a guitar that sounds great, feels great, looks great, and even smells great, satisfying customers who have great taste! This is what I strive to provide, even when it means investing more time. I do not build guitars for mass production, but I build unique guitars that are inspiring to play, inspiring to see, and inspiring to hold. It is more important to me to take the time to put my heart into ten fine guitars a year. Creating a guitar to get the best tonal characteristics requires adding more intricate bracing patterns, such as the lattice bracing, and individually voicing each guitar top to maximize its potential.

Comfort in every regard is very important to me. As with all my guitars, the bindings are bevelled to take the edge off of every contact point of the guitar. I also strive to build a lighter guitar, which provides a more connected feeling when being played due to its liveliness in your lap. Playability is one of the most important aspects of Doerr guitars. If not set up correctly, it does not matter how good a guitar sounds or looks; you will not want to play it. Set up and playability are key elements for a pleasurable guitar!

Another beauty from Tom, this is my first from his new Standard range. You don't get his famous bevelled bindings and a few other extras such as the carved rear headstock that are standard features on the Signature range but you do get the same fantastic sound and one of the most beautiful headstocks I've seen... and you save around £2000!

This Legacy has unbelievable separation and definition from the low E all the way to the top, each note is clear and well defined. It also has great volume and a rich and deep tone, responding equally well to a pick or the gentlest fingerstyle, a very versatile guitar.

Truly outstanding in all departments! This beauty made its prowess known during tune-up.

Acoustic magazine's reviewer Steve Bennett was here when it arrived. A few of Steve's thoughts.

    Remarkable volume.

The grand piano clarity that only the very best instruments deliver.

    Incredible and amazing sustain.

I suspect that there is nothing that this won't do beautifully whether you want a fingerstyle guitar or a strummer.

It not only looks like a work of art, it sounds like one.

My first from Tom and more than ample proof of the reputation he has gained over recent years.

With bevelled bindings top an back it is a supremely comfortable guitar to play. Feeling so comfortable and at ease allows you to concentrate on playing and listening to its wonderful tone. It has a deep an sonorous, rich and mellow sound with great separation and definition, fantastic for letting each note contribute a full palate and blend with the next. A dream fingerstylists guitar.

And not to forget, fantastic workmanship and detailing (look at the back of the headstock), a work of art.
