Collings Guitars

Collings Guitars

I am delighted to be stocking Collings guitars again, their mandolins have been best sellers at TAMCO for many years now.

When I had a visit form the legendary Jeff Traugott in 2016 he was waxing lyrical about Bill Collings and his team's work. I also hear from many of my mandolin customers that they play Collings guitars so I decided to stock them again. For most they will need no introduction, impeccable workmanship and incredible tone comes as standard.

Three Waterloo models due soon.

Weighing in at under three pounds, the featherweight WL-K is an exciting new 12-fret addition to the Waterloo line built with maximum responsiveness in mind. Inspired by the elusive instruments manufactured under the sub-brand Kel Kroydon around 1930, which were touted at the time to offer the utmost in vibratory response and the finest tone available, the WL-K is delicately built using lightweight materials and supported by thinly carved braces. When paired with a minimal lacquer finish, the resulting tone is dry and transparent with just the right level of complexity in the overtones, capable of capturing the expressiveness of the player down to the finest nuance.

With a 24 7/8" scale length and moderately sized, oval shaped neck, the WL-K is a fingerstyle player's delight, but this is by no means the extent of the guitar’s versatility. Exceptional clarity and note separation make it well-suited to a variety of other playing styles and a logical choice for singer-songwriters and purveyors of traditional roots music. A carbon fiber T-bar running through the neck provides stability and efficient transfers of energy back into the body, producing a resonance you can feel.

All WL-K models feature carefully selected spruce tops and mahogany back and sides with a light shade top finish, vintage-style cutthrough saddle, and come sans-pickguard. Due to this model's ultra-lightweight construction, we recommend a maximum string gauge of .011" to .052". Hardshell TKL case included.

All Waterloo models are handmade in Austin, Texas.

The new WL-S Deluxe possesses a richness, dimensionality, and warmth that must be heard to be believed. Inspired by ornately appointed Stella guitars from the 1930’s, the WL-S features intricate wood purflings and custom acrylic inlays for an appearance to match its detailed tone. A hand rubbed varnish finish completes the WL-S both aesthetically and tonally, with a beautiful vintage patina and acoustical excitability that brings out the nuances of this ladder braced design. A solid cherry wood back and sides further enhance the unique character of this guitar, providing exceptional balance and articulation.

All WL-S models feature a vintage correct “Soft-V” neck profile with a carbon fiber T-Bar, a slotted headstock, and a pyramid bridge with a cutthrough saddle. Hardshell TKL case included.

All Waterloo models are handmade in Austin, Texas.

Another classic OM from Bill's team. Walnut has for a long time been one of my favourite back and side woods.

It is famed for deep and well defined lows, and strong mids, with rich even treble tones and lots of sustain. It has the depth of rosewood and the clarity of mahogany. A little brighter than mahogany, but not quite as bright as maple.

This beauty has the classic rosewood dreadnought sound, it is very deep, warm and resonant with lots of headroom and great projection. The bass notes are very well defined with rich and complex mids and clear/sharp trebles. It has fantastic volume and definition, add Collings incredible workmanship and you will struggle to find a rosewood dread to match this beauty.

It was Jeff Traugott's thoughts on Collings that made me decide to stock Collings guitars again. This gorgeous rosewood OM is a great example of why Jeff rates them so highly.

It has everything you would want from an OM, deep luscious tone with great resonance and complexity with fantastic definition all the way from the well defined bass notes through the wonderful mids to the very clear trebles. The responsiveness is remarkable whether playing with nail-less fingers or a pick. It makes a great all-rounder.
