    Here is what Northfield have to say about it.

    In creating our octave mandolin, we’ve pulled together a variety of specs and influences to create something with a unique voice and aesthetic. We found inspiration in vintage archtop and tenor guitars.

    The ergonomics and size of the instrument needed to be considered carefully to not only ensure incredible sound, but also be comfortable for a mandolin player—this was often overlooked when it came to guitar bodied octave mandolins. The scale length and fretting hand stretch is always a consideration with octave mandolins, but equally important for comfortable playing is how the right arm reaches around the body of the instrument. The dimensions and flat back of our octave mandolin body yield something quite different than what is found on the market today.

    As a reference we looked at C2 and C4 Martin guitars from the 1930s—these instruments were archtop guitars based on the body frame of a flat top guitar. We were able to get our hands on two original tops which had been removed from these Martin models by our good friend Joe Konkoly, head of the world renowned Elderly Instruments repair shop. Joe is a master luthier specializing in large jobs like converting the 30’s era Martin archtops to flattops as desired by many modern day players. While the Martin archtops are largely overlooked amongst other vintage examples, we recognized some very unique and desirable design qualities. They had a very unusual geometry to the arching of the top as well as the graduation. This arching, particularly the high peak of the arch running down the center of the instrument, yields a vibrant high end frequency response quite suitable for the octave mandolin. Increasing the volume of the instrument while keeping the balance and the articulation across all the strings was very important to us.

    The jazz guitar bodied octave mandolin seems to be the way to go, it has magical qualities, bass that I've not heard in other octaves, it is well defined and solid, if you like your octave mandolins jangly this is not for you. If you like a strong bass and lots of deep warm sound with great definition and projection it is perfect.

    The Northfield Big Mon has been creating quite a stir. It has a big fat tone with fantastic volume and projection. Created as the ideal bluegrass hoss (or cannon if you prefer) it has great depth and richness of tone to take on pretty well any style, with great responsiveness from the lightest touch to the heaviest attack with a thick pick.

    From the Northfield website. "Our "Big Mon" Mandolin is something we created in our shop. In an effort to try and create a little more mid range and bass response, with a nice airy sound, we developed this model to have a distinct voice. Here's what we did..

    The "Big Mon" body style is just slightly different than the standard size. We've increased the width of the body, at its widest point, by 5mm. We've also adjusted the depth/width of the sides a little in a few places. Everything is in proportion to this change, so it results in a slightly larger body overall. It's not very noticeable unless you compare it directly to another standard size by lining them up back to back."

    Northfield has gained a fantastic reputation over the last few years.

    Tone-wise it is identical to the amber F2S that sold the day after it arrived so I will use the same words. "It has the beautiful rich and deep tones you would want from an oval hole mandolin and great clarity and definition (thanks in part to the Adirondack top) so you have a very full tone and great note separation making it fantastic for most styles of playing, folk, classical and old time (it even has a decent chop for the bluegrassers). It plays very easily and has plenty of volume, responding extremely well to a light touch or a heavier pick.

    Another amazing octave mandolin from Bill. Colorado engelmann spruce top (milled 1997) with red spruce spruce x bracing, Vermont mamaple (milled 2006) 2 piece back, 16" radius macassar ebony fretboard, bridge, pickguard, and peghead veneer, ivoroid celluloid binding, abalone position dots and wave inlay, 1 3/8 bison bone nut, grover tuners, sunburst lacquer finish over shella, Mangan custom 48-34-23-13 strings, tweed hardshell case.

    I have only ever owned two octave mandolins personally, both made by Mr. Bussmann.To use one of my favourite cliches again it sounds as good as it looks. Well defined bass (not a common feature on octave mandolins) with depth and resonance, warm and complex mids with clear and strong trebles... fantastic.

    Oval or f hole for a mandocello? It would seem logical that a cello would be better with oval holes given that bass and resonance is the point of a cello. I was surprised when I visited Bill Bussmann to hear the incredible bass from his jazz guitar bodied, f hole, octave mandolin, so surprised that I insisted he sell it to me! Not being a jazz fan I have never understood the sound of a jazz guitar, I just don't get it or particularly like it. It's the last thing I would have thought would produce a bassy and resonant larger mandolin family instrument, but is does! ... end of long story.... This Eastman cello proves the theory that somehow a jazz guitar body produces a deep and resonant sound. It has incredible warm and dark basses with rich and thick resonance, it plays easily and is a very fine mandocello. Comes with hardshell case.

    Wonderful Martin 5-17T Tenor Guitar 1932. All original with banjo tuners and 'Earl Mead's Hawaiians' case.

    It arrived with CGDA tuning (the same as a mandola) but to me it sounded much better with a new set of strings in GDAE (octave mandolin) tuning. It has a very loud and full tone with lots of warmth and depth.

    Legendary Luthiers: Linda Manzer visit 8 November 2014

    Following the great success of Ervin Somogyi's visit I decided to offer a Legendary Luthiers series of visits to TAMCO. Legends in contemporary guitar luthiery don't get any bigger than Linda Manzer.

    The visit was a great success. It was an honour to have Linda and Peggy White here. After a few hours chatting in the shop we all went over to Bom Bane's Café where Linda gave a wonderful slide show and Jane (Bom Bane) provided a fantastic spread of delicious food. It really was a privilege to hear Linda tell her story I'm I am over the moon to have one of her guitars in stock.

    I'm hoping to have Linda's close friend Grit Laskin and Jeff Traugott over in 2015.

    This was another huge success. Many thanks to Jeff for a fantastic day and a very interesting talk.

    This will be the fifth legendary Luthiers event. Previous events with Ervin Somogyi, Linda Manzer, Ray Kraut and Grit Laskin were a great success.

    Jeff will be bringing the next TAMCO guitar, specs still to be decided, let me know if you have any ideas. He is keen to discuss your requirements and take orders.

    It will follow the usual pattern, open house in my shop on the Saturday until six, talk at six, ticket holders only, then food at Bom Bane's at around eight. There are only twenty tickets available.

    This will be the fourth legendary Luthiers event. Previous events with Ervin Somogyi, Linda Manzer and Grit Laskin were a great success.

    The idea started out as a meet for owners of Ervin Somogyi and his apprentices guitars. Then I remembered that I was due a guitar from Ray Kraut soon. So Ray will be bringing a guitar and giving a talk.

    I am hoping many of you with guitars by Ervin and his apprentices will come along with your guitars and compare and contrast! I am planning to video the event and will continue with the owners meet in my house on the Sunday of there is enough interest. Non owners welcome too!

    I should have Somogyi apprentices guitars in stock from Ray, Leo Buendia, Hiroshi Ogino and Michi Matsuda.

    Lynn makes very few of his A-1 model to a basic spec, no variations. I originally bought it from Lynn, he told me that he enjoys making these once in a while because he doesn’t have to work to other people’s requirements. It still has the 'Dude' sound, they don't come any better, volume and subtlety, richness and clarity, projection and intimacy, its has it all. And I think it looks amazing.

    William (Grit) Laskin is legendary for his inlays. He is a VERY entertaining speaker covering his part in the development of the soundport and arm bevel with many informative and interesting stories to tell.
