A very rare opportunity to get a used big Mon in excellent condition. Save £1000 on the new price.

The Northfield Big Mon has been creating quite a stir. It has a big fat tone with fantastic volume and projection. Created as the ideal bluegrass hoss (or cannon if you prefer) it has great depth and richness of tone to take on pretty well any style, with great responsiveness from the lightest touch to the heaviest attack with a thick pick.

From the Northfield website. "Our "Big Mon" Mandolin is something we created in our shop. In an effort to try and create a little more mid range and bass response, with a nice airy sound, we developed this model to have a distinct voice. Here's what we did..

The "Big Mon" body style is just slightly different than the standard size. We've increased the width of the body, at its widest point, by 5mm. We've also adjusted the depth/width of the sides a little in a few places. Everything is in proportion to this change, so it results in a slightly larger body overall. It's not very noticeable unless you compare it directly to another standard size by lining them up back to back."

Northfield's F5S has been getting a fantastic reception stateside and with very good reason.

They are bluegrass monsters with a strong and powerful chop and much, much more, strong well defined bass notes, rich and complex mids and clear trebles. The balance and projection is remarkable as is the depth of tone. Great for the aforementioned bluegrass and almost any other style.

Northfield has gained a fantastic reputation over the last few years.

Tone-wise it is identical to the amber F2S that sold the day after it arrived so I will use the same words. "It has the beautiful rich and deep tones you would want from an oval hole mandolin and great clarity and definition (thanks in part to the Adirondack top) so you have a very full tone and great note separation making it fantastic for most styles of playing, folk, classical and old time (it even has a decent chop for the bluegrassers). It plays very easily and has plenty of volume, responding extremely well to a light touch or a heavier pick.

With a 22" scale length this is a very easy playing octave mandolin. The tone is rich and full with great projection.

Here is what Northfield have to say about it.

In creating our octave mandolin, we’ve pulled together a variety of specs and influences to create something with a unique voice and aesthetic. We found inspiration in vintage archtop and tenor guitars.

The ergonomics and size of the instrument needed to be considered carefully to not only ensure incredible sound, but also be comfortable for a mandolin player—this was often overlooked when it came to guitar bodied octave mandolins. The scale length and fretting hand stretch is always a consideration with octave mandolins, but equally important for comfortable playing is how the right arm reaches around the body of the instrument. The dimensions and flat back of our octave mandolin body yield something quite different than what is found on the market today.

As a reference we looked at C2 and C4 Martin guitars from the 1930s—these instruments were archtop guitars based on the body frame of a flat top guitar. We were able to get our hands on two original tops which had been removed from these Martin models by our good friend Joe Konkoly, head of the world renowned Elderly Instruments repair shop. Joe is a master luthier specializing in large jobs like converting the 30’s era Martin archtops to flattops as desired by many modern day players. While the Martin archtops are largely overlooked amongst other vintage examples, we recognized some very unique and desirable design qualities. They had a very unusual geometry to the arching of the top as well as the graduation. This arching, particularly the high peak of the arch running down the center of the instrument, yields a vibrant high end frequency response quite suitable for the octave mandolin. Increasing the volume of the instrument while keeping the balance and the articulation across all the strings was very important to us.

1904 Washburn parlour in excellent condition.

Adirondack/Brazilian rosewood, wooden coffin style case.

The depth and richness of tone of this little beauty is truly remarkable! Its a little clichéd to say how parlour guitars sound like bigger guitars but if you doubt it come and try this stunner. It has a quality of tone that only a hundred and ten years of Adirondack and Brazilian can produce.

The action is 4mm at the 12th fret on the bass side with nothing left on the saddle.

I have no expertise in this area but will do my best to answer any questions. As far as I can tell it is all original except for the bridge pins.

I'm lost for words. The work of a genius.

Michi used a titanium truss rod on this guitar, he says it is the lightest instrument he has made. It is incredibly responsive with deep, warm and clear tone and has great balance with strong and well defined bass notes, rich and complex mids and full, clear trebles and the resonance of a bigger guitar. As I've said before it takes a master to combine qualities that would be either/or in lesser instruments. Built in 2010.

Fantastic Summit Artist from Paul Schneider. Some wear on the scroll spine and some hard to photograph varnish sinkage where the pinkie has been placed but otherwise excellent condition with original case.

This is a bluegrass monster. The bark and chop are loud and clear. The mid range is strong and melodious, the bass solid and well defined. It has a 'speed neck' and would cost nearly £4000 new.

    Rolf says about his Bluegrass model;

Designed for the special bluegrass sound with medium-heavy to heavy strings. Professionals describe this model as having a "cutting chop and superb bass," "great playability," "doesn't seem stiff or hard to play," "perfect balance between strings," and they remark on the added volume and clarity on the E-string, especially in the studio for recordings. Some players use the increased playability to make chop chords on the 12th-14th frets.

If you a looking for a powerful bluegrass mandolin look no further but don't discount it for other styles, this is a very versatile mandolin, light and responsive to all playing styles.

The lower part of the pre 1922 flower pot inlay is covered by a nickel  truss-rod cover. It is all original except the bridge and it is structurally sound with no issues. Modern fiberglass case.

It plays beautifully and has great volume and the deep and resonant tone so beloved of these old Gibsons.

1995 Gibson J-35. Signed by Gibson Master Luthier Ren Ferguson. It is faithful replica of the pre-war Gibson J-35. It features Honduran Mahogany Back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, Ebony fingerboard and saddle, Waverly Tuners and Original Hard case. For most of it's 22 years it was kept unplayed in a case by a collector, so the condition is remarkable for it's age. It has had no repairs, it has no cracks and only a few weather checks (they are hard to see).

It is in excellent condition and has the classic CT-110 sound, there is an amazing depth and richness to the tone, complex but well defined... its very hard to describe the tone of such a fantastic mandolin. Sounds great plugged in too.

There is an Acoustic Magazine review of this guitar here.

    New price was £5395.

This is one of the easiest guitars to play that I've had. Its light with a 24.75" scale, twelve frets to the body and a cutaway, unbelievably responsive and a demonstration of what a great luthier can do with Koa. In mass-produced guitars Koa is usually considered to be bright but lacking in depth and warmth. Not so in the hands of Charlie Hoffman.

    In very good condition.

Lynn makes very few of his A-1 model to a basic spec, no variations. I originally bought it from Lynn, he told me that he enjoys making these once in a while because he doesn’t have to work to other people’s requirements. It still has the 'Dude' sound, they don't come any better, volume and subtlety, richness and clarity, projection and intimacy, its has it all. And I think it looks amazing.

When I first saw this design I couldn't decide if I love or hated it, eventually deciding I wouldn't know until I had one. The Eastman Dawg sponsored DG1 reproduction arrived first and after a while getting used to it I decided I liked it so much I have kept it. This J5 is used with light playing wear and a 1 1/4" (32 mm) nut width. The sound is awesome, incredible volume and projection with strong, vibrant basses, rich and complex mids and precise and sweet trebles.

Another guitar in my ‘small, very easy to play with a big sound’ project. It has a fourteen inch lower bout, short (24.9”) scale, armrest, 12 frets to the body and a cutaway. It just couldn’t be easier to play and the sound is classic Batson. Big and warm but with clarity and balance.. To use one of my favourite clichés a quart in a pint pot.

The Rigel Q95 is also known as the Gypsy Q. It was designed by Ted Eschliman of JazzMando.com. They were voiced by Pete to have the sweet sound of vintage oval-hole mandolins. This is the "Espresso con Pana," cream top with ‘Petite Bouche’ sound hole. It is a wrench to let it go from my collection but sometimes needs must. It is carved from select, highly-figured Vermont rock maple and Adirondack spruce with a maple neck with graphite reinforced truss rod, radiused ebony fingerboard, gold Grover tuners and Rigel tailpiece, abalone diamond-pattern inlays’ internal piezo pickup and hardshell case.

When I got the opportunity to buy it I snapped it up but unfortunately it's the victim of my latest thinning of the herd.. just too many at home..

Number 118 from Bob, mid 1970's or thereabouts. This A5 has a bound headstock, pickguard, radiussed fretboard scooped at the 23rd and 24th frets (possibly not original), Schaller tuners and Allen tailpiece. It's been well played but has no issues. It sounds like all great mandolins should... Incredible volume, separation and projection known to few mandolins but without sacrificing bass and sustain. Deep and rich at the lower end, a sweet, vibrant mid range and clear and bright in the high notes, great for bluegrass or any other mandolin style. With Golden Gate ABS case and McIntyre feather pickup.

This is a fine example of his work with the characteristic Givens sound. Warm and deep bass with phenomenal mids giving that rare chop that is both powerful and musical. The trebles are strong and clear, a great bluegrasser but with enough depth and character to be good for all styles.

After well over10 years at TAMCO the mandobass is sorely missed. I've added a couple of photos of its new owner. I am delighted that it has gone to a good home and is being played instead of just admired.

I am very loathe to part with this beauty, its been my shop mascot for about twelve years but needs must.

Complete with both stands and original gigbag (with a small tear, see photos).

These are very rare and hard to come buy.

The serial number has faded away on this one so the year is unknown. It has one old repaired crack otherwise its in amazing condition with original tuners, bridge, tailpiece and case. This is a loud one with very balanced tone, not as 'tubby' as some, its very clear and warm.

I am beginning to think that 12 frets to the body and a cutaway is in ideal combination, you get the sweetness of the more centred bridge and access all the way to the top fret. And if anyone knows how to do it its John Slobod (John is Circa Guitars).

This is a truly special guitar and shows what plain 'ol rosewood is capable of. With some very fine red spruce (Adirondack) on the top this guitar has the vintage tone John is famous for in bucket loads. Its deep and dark and powerful but also sweet and warm with a wonderful clarity and focus coming from the Adirondack, more headroom than you could ever wish for. It will respond willingly to a heavy pick or the lightest fingernail or fingertip. Magic.

    • Red (Adirondack) spruce top
    • Rosewood back and sides
    • Venetian cutaway
    • 12 frets to the body
    • 25.4” scale
