  2. Beardsell 6A BF mandolin - sold

Beardsell 6A BF mandolin - sold

    Out of stock
I had been aware of Al Beardsell's amazing guitars for a while when I read the feature on him in the Fretboard Journal. I took a look at his website and was amazed to find this remarkable mandolin for sale.

It is one of the most stunning mandolins I have ever seen. The sound has incredible clarity and finesse, power when called for and depth and subtlety when asked.

It is in excellent condition with some very small marks. No previous owner, it was used by Al as a demonstration of his work, and was on loan to Mike Marshall for a few months and shown at his symposium summer 2010.

    Washburn Parlour 1904 (used)

    Out of stock
1904 Washburn parlour in excellent condition. Adirondack/Brazilian rosewood, wooden coffin style case.

The depth and richness of tone of this little beauty is truly remarkable! It's a little clichéd to say how parlour guitars sound like bigger guitars but if you doubt it, come and try this stunner. It has a quality of tone that only a hundred and ten years of Adirondack and Brazilian can produce.

I have no expertise in this area but will do my best to answer any questions. As far as I can tell it is all original except for the bridge pins.

I was gob smacked by the first guitar I had from Mike, I am double gob smacked this time. This is one of the loudest guitars I've ever heard but it has depth and subtlety too. From the lowest bass note to the the highest treble, each note has perfect definition and clarity with a full and strong tone. Whether playing the most delicate fingerstyle or going for it with a pick this beauty takes it in its stride. Incredible.

  7. Legendary Luthiers Four: Ray Kraut and Somogyi and apprentices guitar owners meet 31 Oct 2015

Legendary Luthiers Four: Ray Kraut and Somogyi and apprentices guitar owners meet 31 Oct 2015

This will be the fourth legendary Luthiers event. Previous events with Ervin Somogyi, Linda Manzer and Grit Laskin were a great success.

The idea started out as a meet for owners of Ervin Somogyi and his apprentices guitars. Then I remembered that I was due a guitar from Ray Kraut soon. So Ray will be bringing a guitar and giving a talk.

I am hoping many of you with guitars by Ervin and his apprentices will come along with your guitars and compare and contrast! I am planning to video the event and will continue with the owners meet in my house on the Sunday of there is enough interest. Non owners welcome too!

I should have Somogyi apprentices guitars in stock from Ray, Leo Buendia, Hiroshi Ogino and Michi Matsuda.

It will follow the usual pattern, open house in my shop on the Saturday until six, talk at six, ticket holders only, then food at Bom Bane's at around eight. There are only twenty tickest available.

This was a fantastic success, enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Ray

I'm speechless.. well almost. I've heard and seen a lot of great guitars here at TAMCO, and on my travels over the last ten years or so, and this is one of the most beautiful ever.

I think a lot of players have an ideal sound in their heads for different styles of guitar. This matches my idea of how a Jumbo should sound....perfectly.

It is big and loud with fantastic balance and focus, the depth and richness of tone is stunning. Nothing washes about causing unwanted harmonics and overtones, it's just great!

Its hard to know what to say sometimes when such amazing guitars arrive. I am shocked that Sheldon's work isn't more widely known.

This is an original and wonderful work of art. I'm am fond of commenting on how great luthiers can combine qualities that otherwise might be considered mutually exclusive. Well Sheldon has pulled it off in achieving the big sound that you might expect from a sitka/rosewood sixteen inch guitar of this quality with remarkable individual note clarity and balance.

Players in smaller rooms won't need amplification, neither will those who play with a soft touch - finger tips not nails for instance - lack any response or tonal character. Its big and beautiful and soft and mellow, a guitar that will respond to all moods and playing styles. Brilliant!

Here’s a special offer on a special guitar that has, what some might say, are ‘issues’. We’ve had the guitar in the shop for a while now. During that time it has done its own ‘relic job’ by developing lacquer checking across the whole surface of the Spruce top. The back, sides and neck are unaffected.

Anyone who knows a bit about the ‘lacquer checking’ that is added to modern custom shop electric guitars will understand what I mean by a ‘relic job’. There is absolutely no adverse effect to the tone or the overall loveliness of the guitar, it sounds wonderful, it’s just not something that you usually find on an expensive handmade acoustic guitar. There's an image of the lacquer checking below.

The fret ends on the lower side of the neck could do with a little tidying up too though playability is very good as it is.

There’s not much room left in the saddle for those who like an ultra-low action though the current action is great for fingerstyle.

We don’t currently have the services of a luthier so we are therefore offering this guitar at £2,995, a massive £4,000 discount! Yes, you can own a seven grand guitar that you might not have been able to afford.

Feel free to make us a cheeky offer as long as you don’t mind a cheeky response.

    Carruth OOO-12 - Adirondack & Curly Mahogany

This is my first guitar from Alan and what a beauty it is. Check out the story of the mahogany in this link. I've been getting a lot of mahogany guitars recently and this OOO is a very good example of why, it has a very full tone and great volume with fantastic separation, and individual note definition. I've also been getting a few guitars with the twelve fret body join - known for increasing warmth - and a cutaway so you get the best of all worlds, deep resonant tone, access all the way up and great definition.

This is a light and very responsive guitar with great playability, responding beautifully to the lightest touch or a heavy pick. If you ar looking for a versatile guitar look no further.

There is an Acoustic Magazine review of this guitar here.

    New price was £5395.

This is one of the easiest guitars to play that I've had. Its light with a 24.75" scale, twelve frets to the body and a cutaway, unbelievably responsive and a demonstration of what a great luthier can do with Koa. In mass-produced guitars Koa is usually considered to be bright but lacking in depth and warmth. Not so in the hands of Charlie Hoffman.

    In very good condition.

I can still remember the first conversation I had with Mike (Kemnitzer, Mr. Nugget). I nearly fell over when he said he would like to have some mandolins here at TAMCO. I have just about recovered but am feeling a little unwieldy again. It is a privilege to have a mandolin here by one of the legendary contemporary luthiers. As well as looking like it should cost twice as much the sound is superlative. The note separation and clarity is off the scale,. the depth and quality of tone is something I haven't heard before.. It has volume and subtlety, bark, bite and sweetness.

Spruce top, quilted maple back and sides, French polished oil varnish finish, dark curly koa wood binding with maple purfling, 22 fret curved fingerboard, ebony Koa bound pick-guard, Nugget crest inlay with logo, silver plated Waverly tuners with ebony buttons, silver plated hardware, Calton case.

Legendary Luthiers: Linda Manzer visit 8 November 2014

Following the great success of Ervin Somogyi's visit I decided to offer a Legendary Luthiers series of visits to TAMCO. Legends in contemporary guitar luthiery don't get any bigger than Linda Manzer.

The visit was a great success. It was an honour to have Linda and Peggy White here. After a few hours chatting in the shop we all went over to Bom Bane's Café where Linda gave a wonderful slide show and Jane (Bom Bane) provided a fantastic spread of delicious food. It really was a privilege to hear Linda tell her story I'm I am over the moon to have one of her guitars in stock.

I'm hoping to have Linda's close friend Grit Laskin and Jeff Traugott over in 2015.

My first from Brock Johnson and it won't be the last , this is a great value guitar and quite a looker. It also my first guitar in Pau Ferro and also won't be my last. It has a very full and rounded bass with great clarity, punchy and warm mids and clear bell-like trebles. It also has great playability and overall balance and projection.

  21. Northfield Octave Mandolin in Maple

    Northfield Octave Mandolin in Maple

    £4,975.00

    In stock
With a 22" scale length this is a very easy playing octave mandolin. The tone is rich and full with great projection.

Here is what Northfield have to say about it.

In creating our octave mandolin, we’ve pulled together a variety of specs and influences to create something with a unique voice and aesthetic. We found inspiration in vintage archtop and tenor guitars.

The ergonomics and size of the instrument needed to be considered carefully to not only ensure incredible sound, but also be comfortable for a mandolin player—this was often overlooked when it came to guitar bodied octave mandolins. The scale length and fretting hand stretch is always a consideration with octave mandolins, but equally important for comfortable playing is how the right arm reaches around the body of the instrument. The dimensions and flat back of our octave mandolin body yield something quite different than what is found on the market today.

As a reference we looked at C2 and C4 Martin guitars from the 1930s—these instruments were archtop guitars based on the body frame of a flat top guitar. We were able to get our hands on two original tops which had been removed from these Martin models by our good friend Joe Konkoly, head of the world renowned Elderly Instruments repair shop. Joe is a master luthier specializing in large jobs like converting the 30’s era Martin archtops to flattops as desired by many modern day players. While the Martin archtops are largely overlooked amongst other vintage examples, we recognized some very unique and desirable design qualities. They had a very unusual geometry to the arching of the top as well as the graduation. This arching, particularly the high peak of the arch running down the center of the instrument, yields a vibrant high end frequency response quite suitable for the octave mandolin. Increasing the volume of the instrument while keeping the balance and the articulation across all the strings was very important to us.

Re-voiced by Ervin over the summer of 2015, a letter from Ervin explaining his thinking is included (see photo). This is effectively a new Somogyi that would cost over £30 000 to order now.

Its in excellent condition and has the classic Somogyi tone that Ervin is famous for. It is very rich and full, almost impossible to describe. I have used the expression before that Ervin's guitars sound like a choir of angels with a full orchestra. I still can't think of a better way to put it.

Peggy White Reesling Parlour - Italian Spruce & Flamed Maple

    Out of stock
There has been a lot of discussion on the Acoustic Guitar Forum recently about the tonal properties of maple. Having been a believer for a long time that in the hands of a skilled luthier it makes a fantastic tonewood for the back and sides of guitars (as well as mandolins) I am delighted to see the consensus heading my way.

This gorgeous Reesling parlour guitar from Peggy proves my point. It has fantastic clarity and balance with a lovely deep and resonant tone. The bass notes are full and well defined, the mids warm and complex and the trebles bright, warm and clear.

Before this arrived I was beginning to wonder why I had ordered another Oregon Myrtle guitar from Joel (I think this is the fifth), now I know! It looks great and sounds amazing.

It has wonderful clarity and projection with great balance. All notes are crystal clear with outstanding definition and equal volume across the range. The bass notes are deep and lush with full and complex mids and rich trebles. It responds beautifully to a light touch or a more enthusiastic approach. A great all round guitar for all styles.

    Out of stock
My first two guitars from Steve sold quickly and I like this one even more. Walnut is a wood that is not popular in some quarters but I've liked every Walnut guitar I've had built.

It has a very full and luscious tone with warm and rounded basses with great definition. The mids are rich and complex and the trebles fat but clear all the way up. The overall balance is fantastic with great projection and volume. It has plenty of headroom for those with a heavy pick style and the sweetest clear and resonant tone from a light touch with fingers with or without nails.

    Stunning in all departments.

Leo does it a gain! The last modified dreadnought I had from him sold very quickly. I am not expecting this beauty to be here for long. The workmanship is impeccable, take a look at the rosette and matching end graft and headstock inlay.

The sound is equally outstanding. Many of Ervin Somogyi’s former apprentices make the mod D model and with very good reason, it has all the power and volume you can get from an acoustic guitar with immense headroom. The Swiss spruce a fiddle back mahogany in this very fine example give fantastic clarity. You get incredible depth and richness of tone with great balance with all the notes form the lowest to the highest having equal definition and projection. This is a stunning guitar.

Lynn makes very few of his A-1 model to a basic spec, no variations. I originally bought it from Lynn, he told me that he enjoys making these once in a while because he doesn’t have to work to other people’s requirements. It still has the 'Dude' sound, they don't come any better, volume and subtlety, richness and clarity, projection and intimacy, its has it all. And I think it looks amazing.

There are many reasons why Jeff has had such a reputation for many decades, this is now one of them.

It is hard to describe tone at the best of times but at this level it becomes almost impossible. The Koa BK is Jeff's signature model and now I know why. This is a truly outstanding guitar.

From the deep, luscious basses through the complex and warm mids to the clear and bell-like trebles the definition and projection is exactly the same. I have never before had such a well balanced guitar.

It's hard to know what to say about such an incredible instrument... The bass notes are immense and well defined. The mids have a depth and complexity that is rarely heard. The trebles are fat and full with great clarity and definition.

Reputations like Jeff's take many years to establish and total dedication to maintain, craftsmanship at this level is an honour to witness.

    Gibson J-35 Custom 1995 (used)

    Out of stock
1995 Gibson J-35. Signed by Gibson Master Luthier Ren Ferguson. It is faithful replica of the pre-war Gibson J-35. It features Honduran Mahogany Back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, Ebony fingerboard and saddle, Waverly Tuners and Original Hard case. For most of it's 22 years it was kept unplayed in a case by a collector, so the condition is remarkable for it's age. It has had no repairs, it has no cracks and only a few weather checks (they are hard to see).

Fantastic rich and deep tone, kind of a dreadnought plus with all the power of a dread but with great clarity and projection, great for strumming flatpicking and fingerstyle.

This 12/15 - twelve frets to the body and a 15 inch lower bout - is another fantastic guitar from Steve. The body join at the twelfth fret gives a very full and rich tone due to the changed position of the bridge and the cutaway gives access all the way up.

The result is a warm tone with great balance and the superb definition of Adirondack, deep/well defined bass, complex mids and clear, ringing trebles.

Another tone monster from Grit, and it doesn't look half bad either!

From Grit "the African Blackwood is the equal, in my experience, to old growth Brazilian, especially in terms of its instantaneous responsiveness." I'd have to agree with that. It has a depth and complexity of tone that I have rarely heard with incredible articulation and expressiveness, clarity and definition.

"In researching Leonardo Da Vinci I uncovered something I considered very interesting and enticing. It turns out that in its history, the painting we call the Mona Lisa (“Portrait Of Lisa Del Giacondo “) was stolen only once in its lifetime. In 1911 an Italian man working at the Louvre, walked it out of the museum under his smock. It wasn’t until 2 years later that the painting was recovered, when the thief, Vincenzo Peruggi, offered it to the Uffizi Gallery, back in his home country. He felt he was restoring the painting to it’s rightful home in Italy.

The important aspect of this tale is really its after-effect. Until this theft, the painting was a significant but not particularly exceptional Da Vinci painting of the period. But the notoriety it received from this incident began it’s unceasing rise to fame, until today it’s considered the most valued and valuable painting from the renaissance.

So, this pivotal moment became the root of my story, and of the inlay design I’ve titled “The Peruggia Caper”. And there is a touch of humour.

Here’s a description of the images, starting at the headstock and continuing down the fretboard:

-In the headstock we see a Vertical orientation of the thief, walking off with the painting, which is partially hidden under his half-length smock. The upper portion of the painting is exposed, so we see the upper half of Mona Lisa’s face—plenty enough for us to recognize the image. A small section of her left arm will also be visible. Behind Peruggia we see the stone arches of the Louvre.

-As we move into the fretboard the visuals shift to horizontal orientation and we see the upper arms and head and portions of the graphic square & circle border lines of the Vitruvian man. But in my story, we see his lower left arm grabbing the foot of the thief and his eyes looking in that direction.

-Moving down we see Leonardo’s helicopter—large, but still of a size that all the recognizable parts are in view—but we see that it’s being pushed into service by the extended arm and hand of Leonardo himself.

-The Leonardo gripping the helicopter is based on the only known authenticated self portrait done in his lifetime, when he was middle-aged.
-In the ‘background’ behind this portrait, and contrastingly in a vertical view, we see the iconic image of Leonardo as an old man, this portrait will be done in a way that imitates the original style of the drawing, done in the manner common at the time, which was in red chalk (faded to orange in our time). I will engrave it and fill the cuts with red, and the background material will be a beige Jasper stone, which will give it marbled, aged look. By orienting this image 180 degrees from all the other fretboard elements of the story, it gives the impression that the older Leonardo is just an observer, standing back and overlooking the narrative and his younger self."

I've been hassling Hans to send me a guitar for a few years now. It was well worth the wait. Punchy little parlour is a tired old phrase but it certainly applies here, fantastic volume (OK not as much a s dread) separation and projection with a deep and characterful tone, oak and Adirondack is clearly a winning combination. And what a beauty, I love the look of the oak and Hans' Larson style rosette and purfling. A perfect blues guitar with plenty headroom and sustain for digging in.

I'm lost for words. The work of a genius.

Michi used a titanium truss rod on this guitar, he says it is the lightest instrument he has made. It is incredibly responsive with deep, warm and clear tone and has great balance with strong and well defined bass notes, rich and complex mids and full, clear trebles and the resonance of a bigger guitar. As I've said before it takes a master to combine qualities that would be either/or in lesser instruments. Built in 2010.

There is an Acoustic Magazine review of this guitar here.

With the 'Manzer Wedge' this feels like an OO sized guitar to play, supremely comfortable and effortless.

The balance and clarity is the best I've heard, with perfect individual note definition from bottom to top. There is a depth and richness to the tone that defies belief with incredible articulation. There are good reasons why luthiers like Linda have the reputations that they do; this is one of them.

I liked the tone of the last CLM from Burton so much that I asked him to make this one as close as possible. This is another example of why mahogany is so popular, its been one of my favourite back and side woods for a long while now.

Its another very light and responsive guitar with wonderful warm and sweet mahogany tones, full and rich bass notes, sweet and complex mids and clear, well defined trebles. And some stunning flamed mahogany with Burton's signature black neck, what a beauty.

This is a truly incredible guitar! It responds equally well to the lightest caress or a heavy pick, it will do it all. The bass notes are big, fat and warm and have great definition. There has been a lot of excitement about wenge recently. In these times of traditional tone woods becoming scarce and in some cases tightly restricted and banned, it's great to work with a wood that is plentiful and cheap.

Some find the look of it to be plain but others love the deep and rich variations of colour that can be seen when looking closely, to be very beautiful. The way Kent has combined it with Leopardwood accents makes it an incredibly beautiful guitar however you look at it.

Kent says this is the best guitar he has made and by his standards something.. by my standards it has a wonderful full sound, with complex and resonant tones across its very well balanced and defined range.

The work of a legend in contemporary guitar making and proof of how Ed achieved that status. This is an exceptional guitar. The workmanship and detailing is flawless. The tone is heavenly.

As I have mentioned before it takes years of hard won experience to achieve acoustic qualities that might otherwise be thought of as to some extent mutually exclusive. This amazing guitar has warmth, resonance and richness of tone with remarkable clarity from the fat, well defined bass to the fullest trebles I've heard. I would put it against any guitar I've ever played for balance and evenness of tone. A truly great guitar.

My first from Tom and more than ample proof of the reputation he has gained over recent years.

With bevelled bindings top an back it is a supremely comfortable guitar to play. Feeling so comfortable and at ease allows you to concentrate on playing and listening to its wonderful tone. It has a deep an sonorous, rich and mellow sound with great separation and definition, fantastic for letting each note contribute a full palate and blend with the next. A dream fingerstylists guitar.

A regular customer spotted Chris' work a while ago and I'm very glad he did. This is a beautiful guitar with with a very solid tone, solid seems a strange word to use but what I'm getting at is chords that sound completely even with no strange beats or wolf tones roaming around. Individual notes are strong, well defined and full, the overall tone is dark, rich and vibrant.

Another beauty from Tom, this is my first from his new Standard range. You don't get his famous bevelled bindings and a few other extras such as the carved rear headstock that are standard features on the Signature range but you do get the same fantastic sound and one of the most beautiful headstocks I've seen... and you save around £2000!

This Legacy has unbelievable separation and definition from the low E all the way to the top, each note is clear and well defined. It also has great volume and a rich and deep tone, responding equally well to a pick or the gentlest fingerstyle, a very versatile guitar.

Wow! The bass of a dreadnought but much, much more. A dread I could take home.. want to take home.

Someone who played it before it crossed the pond commented "Sounds like a dread with some sophistication.".. that's a great way to put it.

The neck is adjustable to change the action so you can go from powerhouse picking to gentle fingerstyle in a jiffy.

Kent says "One of the things I've worked hard on and am really happy with about this guitar is the blend of the traditional and contemporary. I grew up in North Carolina around a lot of Bluegrass and traditional Appalachian music but there are plenty of people building traditional dreads and doing a great job of it. I wanted to build something that gave a nod to that tradition but was decidedly my own."

German spruce twinned with Malaysian blackwood gives some of the clearest and and most well defined individual notes I have heard. Of course put those notes together and and the result is harmonious and sweet, delicate fingerstyle, strumming and picking are all well within its competence, its excels at them all.

There is headroom here enough to fly very high indeed and it responds excellently to the lightest touch. While this spectacular guitar is all about accuracy and articulation it comes with depth, warmth and character.

I saw this beauty at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival and couldn't resist it. One of the pleasures of Healdsburg is discovering new talent and meeting luthiers like Ben.

Well, to coin the old cliché it sounds as good as it looks. It has rich warm tones and great clarity with the volume of a much bigger guitar, great balance from down low all the way to the top and fantastic playability. Another I want to take home.

Made in 2015 this beauty is in as new condition.

Adirondack and mad rose is a great combination giving a very full and warm tone with endless headroom as you would expect. It has remarkable richness across all tonal ranges with excellent balance and projection. The bass notes are rich and well defined, the mids very complex and full of character, the trebles are full and bright and clear. All in all a wonderful guitar for everything from hard strumming to a gentle fingerstyle, its response is very even and balanced.

There has been a lot of discussion recently about the merits of maple and the widely held misconception that it gives bright tone.

This beauty from Jimmy proves what a wild misconception it is. I just asked my tech to play it, the first thing he said is that the bass is very strong (I agree), the trebles are very clear and the mids are warm and complex. He is also very impressed by the balance from the lowest note to the highest.

"Forget about how gorgeous this instrument is ... forget about the craftsmanship chops this veteran builder brings to the table ... I had the pleasure of playing this one and ... it has one of the most responsive, powerful and complex tonalities I've played in ages ... LOVE this guitar!"

Fantastic OO from Brent. The OO is my favourite guitar body size and this is a great example of why. The Adirondack and koa give it remarkable clarity and projection and the deep body add great depth and warmth. Strong, well defined bass notes, rich and full mids and clear and sparkling trebles. Its also a joy to play.
