  2. Flinthills/Franzke F5 Special (used)

    Flinthills/Franzke F5 Special (used)

    Out of stock
Used F5 special made by Mark Franzke before he changed the name to Franzke mandolins. Gorgeous Autumn brown gloss sunburst, single bound top and back, solid cast Allen tailpiece, tight tiger striped flamed maple back and sides and mother of pearl logo and headstok inlay. Its loud with powerful mids giving a great 'woof' of air from a chop chord, solid and woody bases and clear, well defined sharp trebles. Great for bluegrass, as mentioned, but it also has a richness in tone to make it a very versatile mandolin. With TKL case.

It has some honest play wear but is structurally sound with no issues. Hence the amazing price, this is one heck of a lot of F5 for a tad under two grand.

    £2,999.00

Here’s a special offer on a special guitar that has, what some might say, are ‘issues’. We’ve had the guitar in the shop for a while now. During that time it has done its own ‘relic job’ by developing lacquer checking across the whole surface of the Spruce top. The back, sides and neck are unaffected.

Anyone who knows a bit about the ‘lacquer checking’ that is added to modern custom shop electric guitars will understand what I mean by a ‘relic job’. There is absolutely no adverse effect to the tone or the overall loveliness of the guitar, it sounds wonderful, it’s just not something that you usually find on an expensive handmade acoustic guitar. There's an image of the lacquer checking below.

The fret ends on the lower side of the neck could do with a little tidying up too though playability is very good as it is.

There’s not much room left in the saddle for those who like an ultra-low action though the current action is great for fingerstyle.

We don’t currently have the services of a luthier so we are therefore offering this guitar at £2,995, a massive £4,000 discount! Yes, you can own a seven grand guitar that you might not have been able to afford.

Feel free to make us a cheeky offer as long as you don’t mind a cheeky response.

  13. Northfield Big Mon F5 Engelmann top (used)

Northfield Big Mon F5 Engelmann top (used)

    Out of stock
A very rare opportunity to get a used big Mon in excellent condition. Save £1000 on the new price.

The Northfield Big Mon has been creating quite a stir. It has a big fat tone with fantastic volume and projection. Created as the ideal bluegrass hoss (or cannon if you prefer) it has great depth and richness of tone to take on pretty well any style, with great responsiveness from the lightest touch to the heaviest attack with a thick pick.

From the Northfield website. "Our "Big Mon" Mandolin is something we created in our shop. In an effort to try and create a little more mid range and bass response, with a nice airy sound, we developed this model to have a distinct voice. Here's what we did..

The "Big Mon" body style is just slightly different than the standard size. We've increased the width of the body, at its widest point, by 5mm. We've also adjusted the depth/width of the sides a little in a few places. Everything is in proportion to this change, so it results in a slightly larger body overall. It's not very noticeable unless you compare it directly to another standard size by lining them up back to back."

Weber tone bar braced F5's are very highly regarded in the US of A by the bluegrass folk, this one is a very fine example. £2,695.00

I first played a Gallatin in the States in the mid nineteen nineties and remember it still. This is an example of where every cent has gone into the sound. With no bindings and a satin finish it looks great.

With a solid hand carved spruce top, solid hand carved maple back and sides, solid cast tailpiece and Brekke bridge it's the least expensive US of A hand-made F5 around. The basic spec of course does not affect the sound, this is a bluegrass cannon, bark and bite a plenty, volume to challenge those b*njos but with enough complexity to make a great all-rounder. With custom hardshell case.

Fantastic Summit Artist from Paul Schneider. Some wear on the scroll spine and some hard to photograph varnish sinkage where the pinkie has been placed but otherwise excellent condition with original case.

This is a bluegrass monster. The bark and chop are loud and clear. The mid range is strong and melodious, the bass solid and well defined. It has a 'speed neck' and would cost nearly £4000 new.

Only two numbers from 'Dude #5' made famous by Chris Thile. People often ask me how they can sound like Chris, this beauty would help plus a few thousand hours of practice!

It sounds like heaven in the mandolin world with amazing depth of tone with huge warm and well defined bass notes, full and complex mids and fat, clear and full trebles.. bliss.

The playability is wonderful with sweet tones from the lightest touch and great bark and chop from a more robust approach.

Another truly fantastic guitar from Ed. There seems to be something extra special about Cuban mahogany, team it with the best Adirondack and Ed's skills and you get something amazing.

I'm tempted to say that this guitar sounds the way it looks - elegant - but it is much more than that. Crystal clear tone with perfect balance and great projection along with fantastic resonance and warmth. A combination that produces wonderful tone with intimacy and complexity. After all the fine words I just want to say that I am gobsmacked!

The standard from Rolfe has a mere strap button to hang it over your shoulder but it makes up for the strap hanger complex with amazing responsiveness. As is the Phoenix trademark it seems to get to the note before you do. Not quite as light as the neoclassical but still lighter than most giving it amazing resonance and projection. People often ask my about playability, I usually respond that it is different for different people, for me this is it, light and open. It has a very punchy sound with well defined bass, strong mids and very precise and clean trebles. I almost forgot to mention how great it looks, Rolfe told me this one has extra specially flamey maple, the photo doesn't do it justice but take a look anyways. With hardshell case.

    Northfield Octave Mandolin in Maple

With a 22" scale length this is a very easy playing octave mandolin. The tone is rich and full with great projection.

Here is what Northfield have to say about it.

In creating our octave mandolin, we’ve pulled together a variety of specs and influences to create something with a unique voice and aesthetic. We found inspiration in vintage archtop and tenor guitars.

The ergonomics and size of the instrument needed to be considered carefully to not only ensure incredible sound, but also be comfortable for a mandolin player—this was often overlooked when it came to guitar bodied octave mandolins. The scale length and fretting hand stretch is always a consideration with octave mandolins, but equally important for comfortable playing is how the right arm reaches around the body of the instrument. The dimensions and flat back of our octave mandolin body yield something quite different than what is found on the market today.

As a reference we looked at C2 and C4 Martin guitars from the 1930s—these instruments were archtop guitars based on the body frame of a flat top guitar. We were able to get our hands on two original tops which had been removed from these Martin models by our good friend Joe Konkoly, head of the world renowned Elderly Instruments repair shop. Joe is a master luthier specializing in large jobs like converting the 30’s era Martin archtops to flattops as desired by many modern day players. While the Martin archtops are largely overlooked amongst other vintage examples, we recognized some very unique and desirable design qualities. They had a very unusual geometry to the arching of the top as well as the graduation. This arching, particularly the high peak of the arch running down the center of the instrument, yields a vibrant high end frequency response quite suitable for the octave mandolin. Increasing the volume of the instrument while keeping the balance and the articulation across all the strings was very important to us.

Lynn makes very few of his A-1 model to a basic spec, no variations. I originally bought it from Lynn, he told me that he enjoys making these once in a while because he doesn’t have to work to other people’s requirements. It still has the 'Dude' sound, they don't come any better, volume and subtlety, richness and clarity, projection and intimacy, its has it all. And I think it looks amazing.

  38. Legendary Luthiers: Linda Manzer visit 8 November 2014

Legendary Luthiers: Linda Manzer visit 8 November 2014

Following the great success of Ervin Somogyi's visit I decided to offer a Legendary Luthiers series of visits to TAMCO. Legends in contemporary guitar luthiery don't get any bigger than Linda Manzer.

The visit was a great success. It was an honour to have Linda and Peggy White here. After a few hours chatting in the shop we all went over to Bom Bane's Café where Linda gave a wonderful slide show and Jane (Bom Bane) provided a fantastic spread of delicious food. It really was a privilege to hear Linda tell her story I'm I am over the moon to have one of her guitars in stock.

I'm hoping to have Linda's close friend Grit Laskin and Jeff Traugott over in 2015.

Legendary Luthiers Four: Ray Kraut and Somogyi and apprentices guitar owners meet 31 Oct 2015

This will be the fourth legendary Luthiers event. Previous events with Ervin Somogyi, Linda Manzer and Grit Laskin were a great success.

The idea started out as a meet for owners of Ervin Somogyi and his apprentices guitars. Then I remembered that I was due a guitar from Ray Kraut soon. So Ray will be bringing a guitar and giving a talk.

I am hoping many of you with guitars by Ervin and his apprentices will come along with your guitars and compare and contrast! I am planning to video the event and will continue with the owners meet in my house on the Sunday of there is enough interest. Non owners welcome too!

I should have Somogyi apprentices guitars in stock from Ray, Leo Buendia, Hiroshi Ogino and Michi Matsuda.

It will follow the usual pattern, open house in my shop on the Saturday until six, talk at six, ticket holders only, then food at Bom Bane's at around eight. There are only twenty tickest available.

This was a fantastic success, enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Ray
