    What can you say about the sound of a Somogyi? There's nothing else like it! Here's my best shot but I can't possibly get even close in words..

    It has a richness of tone that I've not heard in any other guitar, I've used the word orchestral to describe the Somogyi sound before and I still can't think of better description. There's a depth and complexity that that's hard to believe if you haven't heard it for your self. It responds magnificently to the lightest touch and overwhelms with luscious tone with a little more input. This all comes with exceptional balance, projection and clarity.. from a lingering single note to a rapid succession or a full chord, there's music in perfect harmony.

    Here's an edited version of Ervin's thoughts on wenge.

    "Brazilian rosewood, that traditional "Holy Grail" of fine guitar making woods is getting scarce.. [Many woods] are marketed as being desirable and adequate substitutes. In my view, some are and some aren't. As a guitar maker, my own preferences are for woods that are "live" rather than not, regardless of their grain, figure or color. What that means is that one can elicit a live and musical tone from a particular slice or chunk when one taps on it. Some woods can make sound on the order of thummmmmmmm or thimmmmmmmm (ginnnnnnnng, gonnnnnng, pinnnnnnng or ponnnnnnnng also work; I think you get the idea), with bell-like sustain; others go "thwick" or "thud". There are "live" woods that look rather plain, and there are "dead" woods that look like Raquel Welch in 3-D.

    My own searches have brought me to wenge (pronounced WHEN-gay). It's a dark, purplish-brown colored African … The thing that appeals to me about wenge is that it is very live. That is, when you hold a piece of it up and tap on it.. it'll ring like a piece of glass, plate of steel, or a crystal brandy snifter. This quality is known as "vitreousness", which literally means "glasslike-ness". And wenge will make such a sound… Wenge's vitreousness is a function of the wood's being brittle on the level of its cellular structure. In fact, it's that very brittleness that makes the vibrational action, and the sound that this produces, possible… it is this.. that puts wenge in the same category as that most prized of traditional guitar making woods, Brazilian rosewood."

    This will be the fourth legendary Luthiers event. Previous events with Ervin Somogyi, Linda Manzer and Grit Laskin were a great success.

    The idea started out as a meet for owners of Ervin Somogyi and his apprentices guitars. Then I remembered that I was due a guitar from Ray Kraut soon. So Ray will be bringing a guitar and giving a talk.

    I am hoping many of you with guitars by Ervin and his apprentices will come along with your guitars and compare and contrast! I am planning to video the event and will continue with the owners meet in my house on the Sunday of there is enough interest. Non owners welcome too!

    I should have Somogyi apprentices guitars in stock from Ray, Leo Buendia, Hiroshi Ogino and Michi Matsuda.

    It will follow the usual pattern, open house in my shop on the Saturday until six, talk at six, ticket holders only, then food at Bom Bane's at around eight. There are only twenty tickest available.

    This was a fantastic success, enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Ray

    My first two guitars from Steve sold quickly and I like this one even more. Walnut is a wood that is not popular in some quarters but I've liked every Walnut guitar I've had built.

    It has a very full and luscious tone with warm and rounded basses with great definition. The mids are rich and complex and the trebles fat but clear all the way up. The overall balance is fantastic with great projection and volume.     When I first saw this design I couldn't decide if I love or hated it, eventually deciding I wouldn't know until I had one. The Eastman Dawg sponsored DG1 reproduction arrived first and after a while getting used to it I decided I liked it so much I have kept it. This J5 is used with light playing wear and a 1 1/4" (32 mm) nut width. The sound is awesome, incredible volume and projection with strong, vibrant basses, rich and complex mids and precise and sweet trebles.

    With an Adirondack spruce top and Pete's great pickup this custom comet sounds great, acoustic and plugged in. It has Rigel's legendary playability and a rectangular tweed hardshell case. It looks ... fill in the space... I know I am going to get lots of grief about this from the purists but the purest of purists (glad I'm writing not saying this) don't like Rigels anyways.

    It all started with an idea to post on various mandolin websites the opportunity for folk to design their own Rigel. The response was not what I and Pete and Peter had hoped for so I was left with the design job to do myself. Being a literal and unimaginative kind of person the obvious design for Rigel's new Comet model was to make the tail one end of a comet's tail and angle the soundhole for the comet. The guys at Rigel contributed the hot rod car flame and the black top with distant star sparkle and midnight blue back and sides and here we are. I think it's wonderful, if you agree please let me know, if you hate it, please tell somebody else.

    Re-voiced by Ervin over the summer of 2015, a letter from Ervin explaining his thinking is included (see photo). This is effectively a new Somogyi that would cost over £30 000 to order now.

    Its in excellent condition and has the classic Somogyi tone that Ervin is famous for. It is very rich and full, almost impossible to describe. I have used the expression before that Ervin's guitars sound like a choir of angels with a full orchestra. I still can't think of a better way to put it.

    The jazz guitar bodied octave mandolin seems to be the way to go, it has magical qualities, bass that I've not heard in other octaves, it is well defined and solid, if you like your octave mandolins jangly this is not for you. If you like a strong bass and lots of deep warm sound with great definition and projection it is perfect.

    1995 Gibson J-35. Signed by Gibson Master Luthier Ren Ferguson. It is faithful replica of the pre-war Gibson J-35. It features Honduran Mahogany Back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, Ebony fingerboard and saddle, Waverly Tuners and Original Hard case. For most of it's 22 years it was kept unplayed in a case by a collector, so the condition is remarkable for it's age. It has had no repairs, it has no cracks and only a few weather checks (they are hard to see).

    Fantastic rich and deep tone, kind of a dreadnought plus with all the power of a dread but with great clarity and projection, great for strumming flatpicking and fingerstyle.

I originally bought it from Lynn, he told me that he enjoys making these once in a while because he doesn’t have to work to other people’s requirements.     This beauty is one of the best snakes I've heard, as loud as an F5 and with the oval hole sound but pumped up with fantastic clarity and separation. The A2Z snakehead is widely regarded as best of the snakeheads for tone but the A4 snakehead has all the pop of an A2Z but with more depth and resonance.

Gorgeous Autumn brown gloss sunburst, single bound top and back, solid cast Allen tailpiece, tight tiger striped flamed maple back and sides and mother of pearl logo and headstok inlay. Its loud with powerful mids giving a great 'woof' of air from a chop chord, solid and woody bases and clear, well defined sharp trebles. Great for bluegrass, as mentioned, but it also has a richness in tone to make it a very versatile mandolin. With TKL case.

    It has some honest play wear but is structurally sound with no issues. Hence the amazing price, this is one heck of a lot of F5 for a tad under two grand.

    Gorgeous distressed finish Vintage A octave mandolin in excellent condition, 22" inch scale with original case. Hand graduated spruce top and solid flamed maple back and sides. The top, back, neck and headstock are bound, the fretboard is radiussed ebony and it has a solid/cast stainless steel tailpiece, dual action truss rod, Grover tuners, 'The Weber' and flowerpot headstock inlay.

    From Acoustic reviewer Steve Bennett. "It has a very rich tone with fantastic clarity and beautiful sustain with that elusive vintage old time tone. Warmth and clarity in one package, hard to beat." With the K&K pickup it sounds just as good plugged in.

    Gibson H1 mandola 1917 pumpkin top in incredible condition apart from the ding on the top and a few other very minor scuffs it looks new, its as shiny as a new pin! All original; tuners, tuner pegs, pickguard and clamp, tailpiece and cover, bridge and case.

    Ooodles of that wonderful deep and dark tone, there is nothing that sounds quite like one of these old Gibbo mandolas, the resonance just keeps going and going and going….

    This one is in very fine condition with no issues whatsoever, ready and willing to go on for another century or two.     This 1921 F4 is has been around to block a few times, but has a great tone. It has a pre 1922 neck with a truss-rod  installed and an adjustable bridge. The lower part of the pre 1922 flower pot inlay is covered by a nickel  truss-rod cover. It is all original except the bridge and it is structurally sound with no issues. Modern fiberglass case.

    It plays beautifully and has great volume and the deep and resonant tone so beloved of these old Gibsons.

    The Northfield Big Mon has been creating quite a stir. It has a big fat tone with fantastic volume and projection. Created as the ideal bluegrass hoss (or cannon if you prefer) it has great depth and richness of tone to take on pretty well any style, with great responsiveness from the lightest touch to the heaviest attack with a thick pick.

    From the Northfield website. "Our "Big Mon" Mandolin is something we created in our shop. In an effort to try and create a little more mid range and bass response, with a nice airy sound, we developed this model to have a distinct voice. Here's what we did..

    The "Big Mon" body style is just slightly different than the standard size. We've increased the width of the body, at its widest point, by 5mm. We've also adjusted the depth/width of the sides a little in a few places. Everything is in proportion to this change, so it results in a slightly larger body overall. It's not very noticeable unless you compare it directly to another standard size by lining them up back to back."

    1920 Gibson O Style Artist in amazing condition, all original including case (a bit tatty with the cloth covering removed). The Style O was made famous by Big Bill Broonzy.

    I had been wanting to get my hands on one fo these for a very long time, and then I find two in a few months! It plays beautifully with a rich and full tone, more of a flat-top than archtop sound. All in perfect working order with good action and no buzzes or rattles.

    This is an early Gibson A style mandolin with "pumpkin" top and Orville Gibson's picture on the label. The mandolin has the first version of the elevated pickguard but it is missing the clamp. The tailpiece cover is the earliest version that is a bit more ornate. The original bridge height is a full 3/4". The finish is great and the top is fully arched with no sinking. This a great playing antique instrument. Classic vintage Gibbo tone, lots of that wonderful deep and resonant bass, warm and sweet mids and clear trebles.

    This one has been around the block a few times but its all sound and plays well with low action and no issues. The back seem has an old cleated repair and there is a repaired crack.

    It has the much sought after and gorgeous Handel inlaid tuners, original pineapple tailpiece, some top flattening and an adjustable bridge. The case is also original but has seen better times (see photo).

    The sound is on the brighter side for an A4, it has some of the clarity of the snakehead sound. A great player, at this price it won't be around long.

    This is Weber's top of the line A mandolin. Its a stunner and features a hand graduated and tuned solid Red Spruce/Adirondack top, hand scalloped spruce tone bars, flamed maple back and sides, "The Weber" script in MOP and Fern inlay in Abalone, cast Weber gold tailpiece, gold Grover tuners, Traditional Brekke Bridge and comes in a deluxe rectangular case.

    Its a Fern F5 without the strap hanger and around three grand less but has 'the sound', its punchy with enough chop to lay low a few ban*os, with a sweet and sublime power. A gentler approach yields a very sweet, rich and warm sound with great separation and balance. This is a truly outstanding all-rounder.

    Whether hunting ban*oes or serenading, this beauty will be a faithful and willing accomplice.

    Fantastic Summit Artist from Paul Schneider. Some wear on the scroll spine and some hard to photograph varnish sinkage where the pinkie has been placed but otherwise excellent condition with original case.

    This is a bluegrass monster. The bark and chop are loud and clear. The mid range is strong and melodious, the bass solid and well defined. It has a 'speed neck' and would cost nearly £4000 new.

Its light with a 24.75" scale, twelve frets to the body and a cutaway, unbelievably responsive and a demonstration of what a great luthier can do with Koa.
