Northfield Big Mon F5 Engelmann top (used)

    Out of stock
A very rare opportunity to get a used big Mon in excellent condition. Save £1000 on the new price.

The Northfield Big Mon has been creating quite a stir. It has a big fat tone with fantastic volume and projection. Created as the ideal bluegrass hoss (or cannon if you prefer) it has great depth and richness of tone to take on pretty well any style, with great responsiveness from the lightest touch to the heaviest attack with a thick pick.

From the Northfield website. "Our "Big Mon" Mandolin is something we created in our shop. In an effort to try and create a little more mid range and bass response, with a nice airy sound, we developed this model to have a distinct voice. Here's what we did..

The "Big Mon" body style is just slightly different than the standard size. We've increased the width of the body, at its widest point, by 5mm. We've also adjusted the depth/width of the sides a little in a few places. Everything is in proportion to this change, so it results in a slightly larger body overall. It's not very noticeable unless you compare it directly to another standard size by lining them up back to back."

I'm speechless.. well almost. I've heard and seen a lot of great guitars here at TAMCO, and on my travels over the last ten years or so, and this is one of the most beautiful ever.

I think a lot of players have an ideal sound in their heads for different styles of guitar. This matches my idea of how a Jumbo should sound....perfectly.

It is big and loud with fantastic balance and focus, the depth and richness of tone is stunning. Nothing washes about causing unwanted harmonics and overtones, it's just great!

    Berkowitz F6 Concert - Sitka & Padauk

Padauk is gaining in popularity and this beautiful guitar from David demonstrates why. The first thing that strikes me is a very deep and luxurious bass with fantastic resonance across the range. This is a big sound that is very rich and warm that responds well to a pick or the most delicate fingerstyle.

It takes a very experienced luthier to achieve this level of warmth and resonance and have great definition and note separation. This is a wonderful and very versatile guitar.

I am gobsmaked, overawed and over the moon. If you think this beauty looks great you should hear it. Forget any thoughts of small body tone this is at least the equal any OM and many an SJ in the volume and depth department.

It has a very warm and sweet tone with great richness and complexity. Fantastic articulation, definition and projection from the well defined bass notes trough the sweet mids to clear and full trebles. If I was was on a desert island and only had one guitar...

It's a little clichéd to say how parlour guitars sound like bigger guitars but if you doubt it, come and try this stunner. It has a quality of tone that only a hundred and ten years of Adirondack and Brazilian can produce.

I have no expertise in this area but will do my best to answer any questions. As far as I can tell it is all original except for the bridge pins.

It has fantastic balance and projection with great warmth, depth and clarity. My mother used to say 'great things come in small packages' this certainly applies here. It has as much volume as a much bigger guitar and is a comfortable to play as you could possibly wish for.

In excellent condition, new price was £5995. There was a lot of excitement created about this beauty in a build thread on the AGF. It was well worth the wait.

It sounds tremendous, a big and warm sound but with great articulation and the clarity and definition of cocobolo. It responds to a nail-less finger as easily as a heavy pick. A fantastic fingerstyle guitar but capable of much more.

The Rigel Q95 is also known as the Gypsy Q. It was designed by Ted Eschliman of JazzMando.com. They were voiced by Pete to have the sweet sound of vintage oval-hole mandolins. This is the "Espresso con Pana," cream top with ‘Petite Bouche’ sound hole. It is a wrench to let it go from my collection but sometimes needs must. It is carved from select, highly-figured Vermont rock maple and Adirondack spruce with a maple neck with graphite reinforced truss rod, radiused ebony fingerboard, gold Grover tuners and Rigel tailpiece, abalone diamond-pattern inlays’ internal piezo pickup and hardshell case.

A beautiful F5 style octave mandolin with hand graduated spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. The top is bound, the fretboard is radiussed and bound ebony and it has a solid/cast stainless steel tailpiece, dual action truss rod, Grover tuners, Celtic knot and 'Weber' headstock design and a custom hard case.

I had been aware of Al Beardsell's amazing guitars for a while when I read the feature on him in the Fretboard Journal. I took a look at his website and was amazed to find this remarkable mandolin for sale.

It is one of the most stunning mandolins I have ever seen. The sound has incredible clarity and finesse, power when called for and depth and subtlety when asked.

It is in excellent condition with some very small marks. No previous owner, it was used by Al as a demonstration of his work, and was on loan to Mike Marshall for a few months and shown at his symposium summer 2010.

Its hard to know what to say sometimes when such amazing guitars arrive. I am shocked that Sheldon's work isn't more widely known.

This is an original and wonderful work of art. I'm am fond of commenting on how great luthiers can combine qualities that otherwise might be considered mutually exclusive. Well Sheldon has pulled it off in achieving the big sound that you might expect from a sitka/rosewood sixteen inch guitar of this quality with remarkable individual note clarity and balance.

Players in smaller rooms won't need amplification, neither will those who play with a soft touch - finger tips not nails for instance - lack any response or tonal character. Its big and beautiful and soft and mellow, a guitar that will respond to all moods and playing styles. Brilliant!

Another amazing octave mandolin from Bill. Colorado engelmann spruce top (milled 1997) with red spruce spruce x bracing, Vermont mamaple (milled 2006) 2 piece back, 16" radius macassar ebony fretboard, bridge, pickguard, and peghead veneer, ivoroid celluloid binding, abalone position dots and wave inlay, 1 3/8 bison bone nut, grover tuners, sunburst lacquer finish over shella, Mangan custom 48-34-23-13 strings, tweed hardshell case.

I have only ever owned two octave mandolins personally, both made by Mr. Bussmann. To use one of my favourite cliches again it sounds as good as it looks. Well defined bass (not a common feature on octave mandolins) with depth and resonance, warm and complex mids with clear and strong trebles... fantastic.

There is an Acoustic Magazine review of this guitar here.

    New price was £5395.

This is one of the easiest guitars to play that I've had. Its light with a 24.75" scale, twelve frets to the body and a cutaway, unbelievably responsive and a demonstration of what a great luthier can do with Koa. In mass-produced guitars Koa is usually considered to be bright but lacking in depth and warmth. Not so in the hands of Charlie Hoffman.

  38. Northfield Octave Mandolin in Maple

    Northfield Octave Mandolin in Maple

    £4,975.00

    In stock
With a 22" scale length this is a very easy playing octave mandolin. The tone is rich and full with great projection.

Here is what Northfield have to say about it.

In creating our octave mandolin, we’ve pulled together a variety of specs and influences to create something with a unique voice and aesthetic. We found inspiration in vintage archtop and tenor guitars.

The ergonomics and size of the instrument needed to be considered carefully to not only ensure incredible sound, but also be comfortable for a mandolin player—this was often overlooked when it came to guitar bodied octave mandolins. The scale length and fretting hand stretch is always a consideration with octave mandolins, but equally important for comfortable playing is how the right arm reaches around the body of the instrument. The dimensions and flat back of our octave mandolin body yield something quite different than what is found on the market today.

As a reference we looked at C2 and C4 Martin guitars from the 1930s—these instruments were archtop guitars based on the body frame of a flat top guitar. We were able to get our hands on two original tops which had been removed from these Martin models by our good friend Joe Konkoly, head of the world renowned Elderly Instruments repair shop. Joe is a master luthier specializing in large jobs like converting the 30’s era Martin archtops to flattops as desired by many modern day players. While the Martin archtops are largely overlooked amongst other vintage examples, we recognized some very unique and desirable design qualities. They had a very unusual geometry to the arching of the top as well as the graduation. This arching, particularly the high peak of the arch running down the center of the instrument, yields a vibrant high end frequency response quite suitable for the octave mandolin. Increasing the volume of the instrument while keeping the balance and the articulation across all the strings was very important to us.

I'm lost for words. The work of a genius.

Michi used a titanium truss rod on this guitar, he says it is the lightest instrument he has made. It is incredibly responsive with deep, warm and clear tone and has great balance with strong and well defined bass notes, rich and complex mids and full, clear trebles and the resonance of a bigger guitar. As I've said before it takes a master to combine qualities that would be either/or in lesser instruments. Built in 2010.

Beautiful A5 Bitterroot with flame maple back and sides, spruce top, radiussed ebony fretboard and Brekke bridge, tone bar braced, 1 1/8" nut width, cast Weber stainless steel tailpiece, nickel Grover tuners, dual action adjustable truss rod and custom hard case. The Bitterroot is our best selling F5 and this gem sounds just as good for quite a lot less, lacking what the Americans call a thousand dollar strap hanger but nothing else, it has huge volume and clarity making it a bluegrass monster, but with depth and subtlety too for other styles, a great sounding and looking mandolin at a great price.

  47. Legendary Luthiers: Linda Manzer visit 8 November 2014

Legendary Luthiers: Linda Manzer visit 8 November 2014

Following the great success of Ervin Somogyi's visit I decided to offer a Legendary Luthiers series of visits to TAMCO. Legends in contemporary guitar luthiery don't get any bigger than Linda Manzer.

The visit was a great success. It was an honour to have Linda and Peggy White here. After a few hours chatting in the shop we all went over to Bom Bane's Café where Linda gave a wonderful slide show and Jane (Bom Bane) provided a fantastic spread of delicious food. It really was a privilege to hear Linda tell her story I'm I am over the moon to have one of her guitars in stock.

I'm hoping to have Linda's close friend Grit Laskin and Jeff Traugott over in 2015.

I saw this beauty at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival and couldn't resist it. One of the pleasures of Healdsburg is discovering new talent and meeting luthiers like Ben.

Well, to coin the old cliché it sounds as good as it looks. It has rich warm tones and great clarity with the volume of a much bigger guitar, great balance from down low all the way to the top and fantastic playability. Another I want to take home.

  49. Somogyi OM - sold

    Somogyi OM - sold

    Out of stock
SOLD. OO and OM both in African blackwood due summer 2015.

What can you say about the sound of a Somogyi? There's nothing else like it! Here's my best shot but I can't possibly get even close in words..

It has a richness of tone that I've not heard in any other guitar, I've used the word orchestral to describe the Somogyi sound before and I still can't think of better description. There's a depth and complexity that that's hard to believe if you haven't heard it for your self. It responds magnificently to the lightest touch and overwhelms with luscious tone with a little more input. This all comes with exceptional balance, projection and clarity.. from a lingering single note to a rapid succession or a full chord, there's music in perfect harmony.

Here's an edited version of Ervin's thoughts on wenge.

"Brazilian rosewood, that traditional "Holy Grail" of fine guitar making woods is getting scarce.. [Many woods] are marketed as being desirable and adequate substitutes. In my view, some are and some aren't. As a guitar maker, my own preferences are for woods that are "live" rather than not, regardless of their grain, figure or color. What that means is that one can elicit a live and musical tone from a particular slice or chunk when one taps on it. Some woods can make sound on the order of thummmmmmmm or thimmmmmmmm (ginnnnnnnng, gonnnnnng, pinnnnnnng or ponnnnnnnng also work; I think you get the idea), with bell-like sustain; others go "thwick" or "thud". There are "live" woods that look rather plain, and there are "dead" woods that look like Raquel Welch in 3-D.

My own searches have brought me to wenge (pronounced WHEN-gay). It's a dark, purplish-brown colored African … The thing that appeals to me about wenge is that it is very live. That is, when you hold a piece of it up and tap on it.. it'll ring like a piece of glass, plate of steel, or a crystal brandy snifter. This quality is known as "vitreousness", which literally means "glasslike-ness". And wenge will make such a sound… Wenge's vitreousness is a function of the wood's being brittle on the level of its cellular structure. In fact, it's that very brittleness that makes the vibrational action, and the sound that this produces, possible… it is this.. that puts wenge in the same category as that most prized of traditional guitar making woods, Brazilian rosewood."

I can still remember the first time I saw an instrument by Al. This is my first Beardsell guitar and I am well and truly gobsmacked. It looks like a work of art and plays like a dream.

Brondel A-1c - German Spruce & Malaysian Blackwood

German spruce twinned with Malaysian blackwood gives some of the clearest and and most well defined individual notes I have heard. Of course put those notes together and and the result is harmonious and sweet, delicate fingerstyle, strumming and picking are all well within its competence, its excels at them all.

There is headroom here enough to fly very high indeed and it responds excellently to the lightest touch. While this spectacular guitar is all about accuracy and articulation it comes with depth, warmth and character.

Fantastic Summit Artist from Paul Schneider. Some wear on the scroll spine and some hard to photograph varnish sinkage where the pinkie has been placed but otherwise excellent condition with original case.

This is a bluegrass monster. The bark and chop are loud and clear. The mid range is strong and melodious, the bass solid and well defined. It has a 'speed neck' and would cost nearly £4000 new.

Another tone monster from Grit, and it doesn't look half bad either!

From Grit "the African Blackwood is the equal, in my experience, to old growth Brazilian, especially in terms of its instantaneous responsiveness." I'd have to agree with that. It has a depth and complexity of tone that I have rarely heard with incredible articulation and expressiveness, clarity and definition.

"In researching Leonardo Da Vinci I uncovered something I considered very interesting and enticing. It turns out that in its history, the painting we call the Mona Lisa (“Portrait Of Lisa Del Giacondo “) was stolen only once in its lifetime. In 1911 an Italian man working at the Louvre, walked it out of the museum under his smock. It wasn’t until 2 years later that the painting was recovered, when the thief, Vincenzo Peruggi, offered it to the Uffizi Gallery, back in his home country. He felt he was restoring the painting to it’s rightful home in Italy.

The important aspect of this tale is really its after-effect. Until this theft, the painting was a significant but not particularly exceptional Da Vinci painting of the period. But the notoriety it received from this incident began it’s unceasing rise to fame, until today it’s considered the most valued and valuable painting from the renaissance.

So, this pivotal moment became the root of my story, and of the inlay design I’ve titled “The Peruggia Caper”. And there is a touch of humour.

Here’s a description of the images, starting at the headstock and continuing down the fretboard:

-In the headstock we see a Vertical orientation of the thief, walking off with the painting, which is partially hidden under his half-length smock. The upper portion of the painting is exposed, so we see the upper half of Mona Lisa’s face—plenty enough for us to recognize the image. A small section of her left arm will also be visible. Behind Peruggia we see the stone arches of the Louvre.

-As we move into the fretboard the visuals shift to horizontal orientation and we see the upper arms and head and portions of the graphic square & circle border lines of the Vitruvian man. But in my story, we see his lower left arm grabbing the foot of the thief and his eyes looking in that direction.

-Moving down we see Leonardo’s helicopter—large, but still of a size that all the recognizable parts are in view—but we see that it’s being pushed into service by the extended arm and hand of Leonardo himself.

-The Leonardo gripping the helicopter is based on the only known authenticated self portrait done in his lifetime, when he was middle-aged.
-In the ‘background’ behind this portrait, and contrastingly in a vertical view, we see the iconic image of Leonardo as an old man, this portrait will be done in a way that imitates the original style of the drawing, done in the manner common at the time, which was in red chalk (faded to orange in our time). I will engrave it and fill the cuts with red, and the background material will be a beige Jasper stone, which will give it marbled, aged look. By orienting this image 180 degrees from all the other fretboard elements of the story, it gives the impression that the older Leonardo is just an observer, standing back and overlooking the narrative and his younger self."

Its hard to tell the difference tonally between these two beauties. Both are very loud with strong, well defined and warm bass notes, rich and full mids and clear/precise trebles. Its fantastic to have that wonderful oval hole sound with great definition and projection. The birdseye is gorgeous but so is the Vermont maple... I wouldn't want to have to choose between the two.
