    There has been a lot of excitement about wenge recently. In these times of traditional tone woods becoming scarce and in some cases tightly restricted and banned, it's great to work with a wood that is plentiful and cheap.

    Some find the look of it to be plain but others love the deep and rich variations of colour that can be seen when looking closely, to be very beautiful. The way Kent has combined it with Leopardwood accents makes it an incredibly beautiful guitar however you look at it.

    Kent says this is the best guitar he has made and by his standards something.. by my standards it has a wonderful full sound, with complex and resonant tones across its very well balanced and defined range.

    Here’s a special offer on a special guitar that has, what some might say, are ‘issues’. We’ve had the guitar in the shop for a while now. During that time it has done its own ‘relic job’ by developing lacquer checking across the whole surface of the Spruce top. The back, sides and neck are unaffected.

    Anyone who knows a bit about the ‘lacquer checking’ that is added to modern custom shop electric guitars will understand what I mean by a ‘relic job’. There is absolutely no adverse effect to the tone or the overall loveliness of the guitar, it sounds wonderful, it’s just not something that you usually find on an expensive handmade acoustic guitar. There's an image of the lacquer checking below.

    The fret ends on the lower side of the neck could do with a little tidying up too though playability is very good as it is.

    There’s not much room left in the saddle for those who like an ultra-low action though the current action is great for fingerstyle.

    We don’t currently have the services of a luthier so we are therefore offering this guitar at £2,995, a massive £4,000 discount! Yes, you can own a seven grand guitar that you might not have been able to afford.

    Leo does it a gain! The last modified dreadnought I had from him sold very quickly. I am not expecting this beauty to be here for long. The workmanship is impeccable, take a look at the rosette and matching end graft and headstock inlay.

    The sound is equally outstanding. Many of Ervin Somogyi’s former apprentices make the mod D model and with very good reason, it has all the power and volume you can get from an acoustic guitar with immense headroom. The Swiss spruce a fiddle back mahogany in this very fine example give fantastic clarity. You get incredible depth and richness of tone with great balance with all the notes form the lowest to the highest having equal definition and projection. This is a stunning guitar.

    1995 Gibson J-35. Signed by Gibson Master Luthier Ren Ferguson. It is faithful replica of the pre-war Gibson J-35. It features Honduran Mahogany Back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, Ebony fingerboard and saddle, Waverly Tuners and Original Hard case. For most of it's 22 years it was kept unplayed in a case by a collector, so the condition is remarkable for it's age. It has had no repairs, it has no cracks and only a few weather checks (they are hard to see).

    Fantastic rich and deep tone, kind of a dreadnought plus with all the power of a dread but with great clarity and projection, great for strumming flatpicking and fingerstyle.

    This will be the fourth legendary Luthiers event. Previous events with Ervin Somogyi, Linda Manzer and Grit Laskin were a great success.

    The idea started out as a meet for owners of Ervin Somogyi and his apprentices guitars. Then I remembered that I was due a guitar from Ray Kraut soon. So Ray will be bringing a guitar and giving a talk.

    I am hoping many of you with guitars by Ervin and his apprentices will come along with your guitars and compare and contrast! I am planning to video the event and will continue with the owners meet in my house on the Sunday of there is enough interest. Non owners welcome too!

    I should have Somogyi apprentices guitars in stock from Ray, Leo Buendia, Hiroshi Ogino and Michi Matsuda.

    I'm lost for words. The work of a genius.

    Michi used a titanium truss rod on this guitar, he says it is the lightest instrument he has made. It is incredibly responsive with deep, warm and clear tone and has great balance with strong and well defined bass notes, rich and complex mids and full, clear trebles and the resonance of a bigger guitar. As I've said before it takes a master to combine qualities that would be either/or in lesser instruments. Built in 2010.

    Kent says "One of the things I've worked hard on and am really happy with about this guitar is the blend of the traditional and contemporary. I grew up in North Carolina around a lot of Bluegrass and traditional Appalachian music but there are plenty of people building traditional dreads and doing a great job of it.     The Rigel Q95 is also known as the Gypsy Q. It was designed by Ted Eschliman of JazzMando.com. They were voiced by Pete to have the sweet sound of vintage oval-hole mandolins. This is the "Espresso con Pana," cream top with ‘Petite Bouche’ sound hole. It is a wrench to let it go from my collection but sometimes needs must. It is carved from select, highly-figured Vermont rock maple and Adirondack spruce with a maple neck with graphite reinforced truss rod, radiused ebony fingerboard, gold Grover tuners and Rigel tailpiece, abalone diamond-pattern inlays’ internal piezo pickup and hardshell case.

    With an Adirondack spruce top and Pete's great pickup this custom comet sounds great, acoustic and plugged in. It has Rigel's legendary playability and a rectangular tweed hardshell case. It looks ... fill in the space... I know I am going to get lots of grief about this from the purists but the purest of purists (glad I'm writing not saying this) don't like Rigels anyways.

    It all started with an idea to post on various mandolin websites the opportunity for folk to design their own Rigel. The response was not what I and Pete and Peter had hoped for so I was left with the design job to do myself. Being a literal and unimaginative kind of person the obvious design for Rigel's new Comet model was to make the tail one end of a comet's tail and angle the soundhole for the comet. The guys at Rigel contributed the hot rod car flame and the black top with distant star sparkle and midnight blue back and sides and here we are. I think it's wonderful, if you agree please let me know, if you hate it, please tell somebody else.

    The sound is everything a great oval hole mandolin should be, rich and resonant with deep and sonorous bass notes, sweet and complex mids and clear, sparkling trebles. And non of the boom that comes with some lesser oval holes.

    This is Weber's top of the line A mandolin. Its a stunner and features a hand graduated and tuned solid Red Spruce/Adirondack top, hand scalloped spruce tone bars, flamed maple back and sides, "The Weber" script in MOP and Fern inlay in Abalone, cast Weber gold tailpiece, gold Grover tuners, Traditional Brekke Bridge and comes in a deluxe rectangular case.

    Its a Fern F5 without the strap hanger and around three grand less but has 'the sound', its punchy with enough chop to lay low a few ban*os, with a sweet and sublime power. A gentler approach yields a very sweet, rich and warm sound with great separation and balance. This is a truly outstanding all-rounder.

    Whether hunting ban*oes or serenading, this beauty will be a faithful and willing accomplice.

    A beautiful F5 style octave mandolin with hand graduated spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. It as a 20" scale length and 1 3/8" nut with a traditional Brekke bridge giving excellent playability. The top is bound, the fretboard is radiussed and bound ebony and it has a solid/cast stainless steel tailpiece, dual action truss rod, Grover tuners, Celtic knot and 'Weber' headstock design and a custom hard case.

    It is tone bar braced so there is none of that floppiness common to flat top octave mandolins. It has great power and definition with plenty of character and depth of tone and excellent projection. With a 20" scale it is very easy to play.

    My first two guitars from Steve sold quickly and I like this one even more. Walnut is a wood that is not popular in some quarters but I've liked every Walnut guitar I've had built.
