This is a beauty and a beast, it is very loud. If you like your A5s to be very full with lots of warmth and depth this is the one. The chop has great volume and what I think of as a musical rather than percussive tone.

Lutz spruce top (milled 2005) with red spruce spruce tone bar bracing, Varnum estate birdseye maple (milled 1979), 12" radius macassar ebony fretboard, pickguard, and peghead veneer, ivoroid celluloid binding, abalone position dots and wave inlay, 1 1/8 bison bone nut, grover tuners, dark buckskin lacquer finish over shellac.

Its hard to tell the difference tonally between these two beauties. Both are very loud with strong, well defined and warm bass notes, rich and full mids and clear/precise trebles. Its fantastic to have that wonderful oval hole sound with great definition and projection. The birdseye is gorgeous but so is the Vermont maple... I wouldn't want to have to choose between the two.

When I last visited Bill and played his melon I told him I just had to have one. He said he felt that with the last one (his) he had achieved what he wanted form the idea and didn't want to make anymore. Mean son of a ******.

Anyways, to cut a long story very short a while later I heard those immortal words 'I owe you a favour' this is that favour. I've had it a while now and despite the regular thinning of my herd its staying.

I can still remember the first conversation I had with Mike (Kemnitzer, Mr. Nugget). I nearly fell over when he said he would like to have some mandolins here at TAMCO. I have just about recovered but am feeling a little unwieldy again. It is a privilege to have a mandolin here by one of the legendary contemporary luthiers. As well as looking like it should cost twice as much the sound is superlative. The note separation and clarity is off the scale,. the depth and quality of tone is something I haven't heard before.. It has volume and subtlety, bark, bite and sweetness.

Spruce top, quilted maple back and sides, French polished oil varnish finish, dark curly koa wood binding with maple purfling, 22 fret curved fingerboard, ebony Koa bound pick-guard, Nugget crest inlay with logo, silver plated Waverly tuners with ebony buttons, silver plated hardware, Calton case.

Another tone monster from Grit, and it doesn't look half bad either!

From Grit "the African Blackwood is the equal, in my experience, to old growth Brazilian, especially in terms of its instantaneous responsiveness." I'd have to agree with that. It has a depth and complexity of tone that I have rarely heard with incredible articulation and expressiveness, clarity and definition.

"In researching Leonardo Da Vinci I uncovered something I considered very interesting and enticing. It turns out that in its history, the painting we call the Mona Lisa (“Portrait Of Lisa Del Giacondo “) was stolen only once in its lifetime. In 1911 an Italian man working at the Louvre, walked it out of the museum under his smock. It wasn’t until 2 years later that the painting was recovered, when the thief, Vincenzo Peruggi, offered it to the Uffizi Gallery, back in his home country. He felt he was restoring the painting to it’s rightful home in Italy.

The important aspect of this tale is really its after-effect. Until this theft, the painting was a significant but not particularly exceptional Da Vinci painting of the period. But the notoriety it received from this incident began it’s unceasing rise to fame, until today it’s considered the most valued and valuable painting from the renaissance.

So, this pivotal moment became the root of my story, and of the inlay design I’ve titled “The Peruggia Caper”. And there is a touch of humour.

Here’s a description of the images, starting at the headstock and continuing down the fretboard:

-In the headstock we see a Vertical orientation of the thief, walking off with the painting, which is partially hidden under his half-length smock. The upper portion of the painting is exposed, so we see the upper half of Mona Lisa’s face—plenty enough for us to recognize the image. A small section of her left arm will also be visible. Behind Peruggia we see the stone arches of the Louvre.

-As we move into the fretboard the visuals shift to horizontal orientation and we see the upper arms and head and portions of the graphic square & circle border lines of the Vitruvian man. But in my story, we see his lower left arm grabbing the foot of the thief and his eyes looking in that direction.

-Moving down we see Leonardo’s helicopter—large, but still of a size that all the recognizable parts are in view—but we see that it’s being pushed into service by the extended arm and hand of Leonardo himself.

-The Leonardo gripping the helicopter is based on the only known authenticated self portrait done in his lifetime, when he was middle-aged.
-In the ‘background’ behind this portrait, and contrastingly in a vertical view, we see the iconic image of Leonardo as an old man, this portrait will be done in a way that imitates the original style of the drawing, done in the manner common at the time, which was in red chalk (faded to orange in our time). I will engrave it and fill the cuts with red, and the background material will be a beige Jasper stone, which will give it marbled, aged look. By orienting this image 180 degrees from all the other fretboard elements of the story, it gives the impression that the older Leonardo is just an observer, standing back and overlooking the narrative and his younger self."

I liked the tone of the last CLM from Burton so much that I asked him to make this one as close as possible. This is another example of why mahogany is so popular, its been one of my favourite back and side woods for a long while now.

Its another very light and responsive guitar with wonderful warm and sweet mahogany tones, full and rich bass notes, sweet and complex mids and clear, well defined trebles. And some stunning flamed mahogany with Burton's signature black neck, what a beauty.

Re-voiced by Ervin over the summer of 2015, a letter from Ervin explaining his thinking is included (see photo). This is effectively a new Somogyi that would cost over £30 000 to order now.

Its in excellent condition and has the classic Somogyi tone that Ervin is famous for. It is very rich and full, almost impossible to describe. Weber Gallatin A5 - A Style - F Hole

    Out of stock
Fantastic value A5 from the Weber team. The Gallatin mandolins are designed to get a great sounding mandolin at the best possible price. It has no bindings and satin finish, it looks great and is tone bar braced. It has a Weber solid cast tailpiece, traditional Brekke bridge, radiussed Ebony fingerboard, dual action adjustable truss rod, nickel Grover tuners and comes with a deluxe hardshell case.

The Koa BK is Jeff's signature model and now I know why. This is a truly outstanding guitar.

From the deep, luscious basses through the complex and warm mids to the clear and bell-like trebles the definition and projection is exactly the same. I have never before had such a well balanced guitar.

It's hard to know what to say about such an incredible instrument... The bass notes are immense and well defined. The mids have a depth and complexity that is rarely heard. The trebles are fat and full with great clarity and definition.

Reputations like Jeff's take many years to establish and total dedication to maintain, craftsmanship at this level is an honour to witness.

    Pava A5 - Sunburst

Pava not only makes great mandolins but has wonderful consistency too. The first two sold in a jiffy so don't hang around if you fancy this one.

Playing and describing so many great mandolins sometimes its hard to know what to say so my approach is to start with what strikes me first after a few minutes playing. In this case it was the sweetness of the chop. Some chop chords are dry and percussive, at the other end of the scale they can be sweet and not very good for cutting though against the villain of the piece in the jam (no name but you know which instrument I mean). Occasionally I come across one that in my view is the 'best of all possible worlds' what I think of as a musical chop, loud and with great cut but warm and not dry, this is one of the best examples of this I have come across.

This a VERY versatile mandolin with plenty of the aforementioned chop and cut for the bluegrass player and wonderful depth and richness of tone for other styles. It takes a great luthier to combine clarity and definition and warmth and resonance, Pava has achieved that in this beautiful mandolin.

What can you say about the sound of a Somogyi? There's nothing else like it! Here's my best shot but I can't possibly get even close in words..

It has a richness of tone that I've not heard in any other guitar, I've used the word orchestral to describe the Somogyi sound before and I still can't think of better description. There's a depth and complexity that that's hard to believe if you haven't heard it for your self. It responds magnificently to the lightest touch and overwhelms with luscious tone with a little more input. This all comes with exceptional balance, projection and clarity.. from a lingering single note to a rapid succession or a full chord, there's music in perfect harmony.

Here's an edited version of Ervin's thoughts on wenge.

"Brazilian rosewood, that traditional "Holy Grail" of fine guitar making woods is getting scarce.. [Many woods] are marketed as being desirable and adequate substitutes. In my view, some are and some aren't. As a guitar maker, my own preferences are for woods that are "live" rather than not, regardless of their grain, figure or color. What that means is that one can elicit a live and musical tone from a particular slice or chunk when one taps on it. Some woods can make sound on the order of thummmmmmmm or thimmmmmmmm (ginnnnnnnng, gonnnnnng, pinnnnnnng or ponnnnnnnng also work; I think you get the idea), with bell-like sustain; others go "thwick" or "thud". There are "live" woods that look rather plain, and there are "dead" woods that look like Raquel Welch in 3-D.

My own searches have brought me to wenge (pronounced WHEN-gay). It's a dark, purplish-brown colored African … The thing that appeals to me about wenge is that it is very live. That is, when you hold a piece of it up and tap on it.. it'll ring like a piece of glass, plate of steel, or a crystal brandy snifter. This quality is known as "vitreousness", which literally means "glasslike-ness". And wenge will make such a sound… Wenge's vitreousness is a function of the wood's being brittle on the level of its cellular structure. In fact, it's that very brittleness that makes the vibrational action, and the sound that this produces, possible… it is this.. that puts wenge in the same category as that most prized of traditional guitar making woods, Brazilian rosewood."

Another stunning F5 from Michael, it has a red spruce top, beautiful one piece sugar maple back and sugar maple sides. Finished with a buffed varnish topcoat, abalone headstock inlay, ivoroid top and back binding and a radiussed Ebony fretboard that is twenty eight millimetres at the bone nut and has twenty one medium frets. Nickel James engraved tailpiece, Ebony finger rest/pick guard and an Ebony bridge. With hard case.

This is a true cannon. It has incredible volume, projection and clarity AND richness, depth and resonance. It takes a great luthier to get these qualities in the same instrument. It will chop and bark for the bluegrass player, howl for the blues man, sing sweet for the balladeer and respond willingly to any other style.

Stunning blonde A5 from Mark with an Adirondack top, flamed maple back and sides, ebony fretboard and Cumberland Acoustics bridge, James tailpiece, Golden age tuners, adjustable carbon fibre truss rod and a hard case.

This is my kind of f hole sound, rich and full with plenty of bark and chop. Great for bluegrass but with the depth and complexity of tone for many other styles.

Adirondack top, flamed maple back and sides, triple bound top, back and pickguard, ebony fretboard with 28.5 mm nut width, ebony bridge, engraved James tailpiece, abalone headstock inlay and a TKL case. The sound is incredible, loud and full with that incredible mid range pop that only the best f hole mandolins have. It is remarkably responsive, one of the loudest chops I've heard but sweet and resonant when asked.

In excellent condition with some light playing marks.

I've been hassling Hans to send me a guitar for a few years now. It was well worth the wait. Punchy little parlour is a tired old phrase but it certainly applies here, fantastic volume (OK not as much a s dread) separation and projection with a deep and characterful tone, oak and Adirondack is clearly a winning combination. And what a beauty, I love the look of the oak and Hans' Larson style rosette and purfling. A perfect blues guitar with plenty headroom and sustain for digging in.

There's a ding on the back of the headstock (see photo) £250 has been knocked off because of this.

It is in excellent condition with some very small marks. No previous owner, it was used by Al as a demonstration of his work, and was on loan to Mike Marshall for a few months and shown at his symposium summer 2010.

Adirondack and rosewood make for a very powerful guitar with endless headroom, huge basses, awesome warm and full mids and bright and loud trebles. Anyone who know Vo Fletcher it's previous owner will know that this is the kind of guitar that Vo goes for. Built for performance and filling a venue with great definition and projection it also responds very well to a gentler approach.

In many ways twelve frets to the body and a cutaway is the perfect combination. It gives the sweetness of the more centred bridge position and allows access all the way to the top fret.

It definately works on this beauty from Alan. The first thing that struck me about this guitar is its lightness and ease of play, it feels like a much smaller guitar. It sounds fantastic, rich and resonant with full and well defined bass notes, complex and expressive mids, clear, precise bell-like trebles and great balance and projection. What a beaut!

It features Honduran Mahogany Back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, Ebony fingerboard and saddle, Waverly Tuners and Original Hard case. For most of it's 22 years it was kept unplayed in a case by a collector, so the condition is remarkable for it's age. It has had no repairs, it has no cracks and only a few weather checks (they are hard to see).

There is an Acoustic Magazine review of this guitar here.

    New price was £5395.

This is one of the easiest guitars to play that I've had. Its light with a 24.75" scale, twelve frets to the body and a cutaway, unbelievably responsive and a demonstration of what a great luthier can do with Koa. In mass-produced guitars Koa is usually considered to be bright but lacking in depth and warmth. Not so in the hands of Charlie Hoffman.

    In very good condition.

This is my first guitar from Alan and what a beauty it is. Check out the story of the mahogany in this link. I've been getting a lot of mahogany guitars recently and this OOO is a very good example of why, it has a very full tone and great volume with fantastic separation, and individual note definition. I've also been getting a few guitars with the twelve fret body join - known for increasing warmth - and a cutaway so you get the best of all worlds, deep resonant tone, access all the way up and great definition.

This is a light and very responsive guitar with great playability, responding beautifully to the lightest touch or a heavy pick. If you ar looking for a versatile guitar look no further.

I am very excited to have my first guitar from Nick, its everything I had dreamed of. I can see why he is so much appreciated by the likes of Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn.

When deciding how to describe a guitar the first thing I do is think about what hits me first. This guitar has remarkable articulation and expression, fantastic projection and clarity with each note having perfect definition. Achieving this this along with fantastic depth and complexity of tone is why Nick has the reputation he has.

I'm lost for words. The work of a genius.

Michi used a titanium truss rod on this guitar, he says it is the lightest instrument he has made. It is incredibly responsive with deep, warm and clear tone and has great balance with strong and well defined bass notes, rich and complex mids and full, clear trebles and the resonance of a bigger guitar. As I've said before it takes a master to combine qualities that would be either/or in lesser instruments. Built in 2010.
